Default Old Mercedes vs Lancer: Comfort wise

I am comparing Mercedes old models . W124, W202, W126, W201 with Lancer 2007 model in terms of comfort only.

Is it worth changing Lancer with the above Mercedes models only for sake of comfort ?

Its blue color 1993 model 280E auto. mileage is 189,000km.
VIN 1240282B965572 Asking Price Rs 1.1 million

    Problems:
    1. Battery was dead, started with jump lead
    (bad battery)

    2. The engine idle was rough with smell of unburnt petrol in the air
(If it was the HFM engine - then it maybe a simple cable adjustment, to a bad wiring harness to a bad throttle motor - throttle motor = USD 1200/- for a rebuilt) If jetronic then the idle controller is bad.

    3. Air con / fan / blower was not working. ( i tried all the buttons)
(maybe fuse or bad control unit)

    4. Parking lights / speedometer lights were not working. (light switch gone bad (USD 40/- for new part - if just dash lights not working then try spinning the left knob on the cluster if it illuminates then the rheostat is bad)

    5. Rear headrests did not fall down on pressing of the button
(disconnected vacuum line to the headrests)

    6. Trunk lid would not close, most likely some problem with the lock.
Closed it on 5th attempt. (lock lube)

    7. Bonnet interior cloth was replaced with a foam sheet
(acceptable as the original material is foam+fabric)

8.The black strip below the wiper was not in place and windscreen bottom was exposed on one side.
(was it one piece rubber or 3 piece plastic type) - one piece rubber item is held into a plastic groove in the bottom of the glass, if someone forces the rubber into place without cleanup and lubing with soap the plastic groove will break - this is required to take out the blower motor) - I can show you pictures if you want - just recently lubricated the motor in my car

    9. Some interior fittings were not in place like the plastic cover on the inside of door pillar.
The middle pillar cover if plastic type can break off its mounting tab, a simple repair with a piece of metal, a drill and two rivets fixes that.

Engine was washed and polished. Body seemed ok. I went actually just before maghrib and light levels were falling down.. I will contact the owner and see the car again in daylight.

Check the undercarriage for transmission leaks, specially check the rear suspension arms by trying to move them sideways with a large screwdriver, if they move they need replacement, check the rear subframe mounts by simply feeling the front ones washer plates, if they are flush with the subframe the mounts are bad and the car will drive like a ricksha.

Specially check the front ball joints - they are not replaceable on this model, the entire arm needs to be replaced if they are worn out, If someone has replaced the arm in the past with the old style with replaceable joints then you might be in luck as the joints for that type arm are cheap.

Also check the Dshaft joints and specially check the transmission behaviour when its warmed up.

I just talked to the owner and he says the battery is weak and fuel is low so the engine is behaving like this and aircon is not working due to weak current. He has asked me to come on Wednesday while he puts fuel in the car and changes the battery.

Lets see what happens then. Actually the showroom owner has bought the car from the owner and then selling it. At first he was insisting that the car is perfectly fine. Then when i insisted that it is not working properly and cannot be bought, he agreed to fix the things.

If I have to change the throttle body for USD1200, more than Rs 1 lac.....I think I would be better off finding a better maintained car.

Regarding the black strip, it is one long strip from end of windshield to the other at the bottom. It was not stuck at one side and I could move with my hand.

I spinned the light switch to the left and nothing happened.

another negative point is the high mileage. It is not high for a mercedes but when you go to sell the car in Pakistan market, people are always looking for a low mileage car.

regarding small body parts, I can afford to fix that later on.

low voltage excuse of things not working can also mean a bad overvoltage protection relay, Its design has been superseded three times now, It costs about USD 80/- for a new design MB part. It may also be a blown over voltage relay fuse(s) Rs 10 fix - its (they are) on top of the relay.
If its blown the A/C, dash and some other bits wont work - If you get nothing even with a good fuse then the relay is bad or the wiring is fudged up (possible in Pakistan, I have seen some really rigged cars in Pakistan)

The throttlebody is only valid for an HFM engine - it would be a proper EFI system, M104 also comes in jetronic which is mechanical fuel injection (old type). not expensive unless the fuel distributor is shot. Testing requires some gauges and special tools. Whatever the case ensure the engine idles smoothly when cold and when hot, also make sure the fan clutch is working and the cooling system is not rigged up and it maintains its temperature.

The light switch spins to the right to switch on the lights, left would only turn on the outer left or right parking lights depending on the detent.

To check the rubber strip, lift and see that the rubber strip's small holding lip is not torn off and that the windscreen glass has the female groove for that strip - if its missing then someone broke it off. The plastic bit only comes attached to a new glass.

Be sure to check the front ball joints and arm bushes, If the joints are loose and they are the non replaceable type then you are looking at USD 400/- for replacement parts. You wont be able to use the old style arm if the car has big brake discs. The joints are quite long lasting and their original boots are available as genuine spare parts from MB.

To identify the joint type, feel around and under the joint, if the arm has two fingers on either side and you can feel a separate lip under the joint and a small locating pip then its replaceable.

If you cannot feel any finger projections on the sides, no lip under the joint and the joint itself is sitting in a housing that is shaped like a pizza slice (triangle) then the joint is not replaceable.

its nearly impossible to find a neat clean merc of your choice on a showroom. it is always better to buy a running merc here.

    I read the first page and then jumped here to give my opinion ;
I have this lancer 07 for a year now ... i am facinated by mercs, crowns and accords but after a lot of thinking process and interviews i've decided that i'll go for a accord or crown (if i ever put my plan to reality) first then i'll go for the merc.

need a fever?? - lol - you need a bukhaar from me?

anyway - cruise not working, check the error codes from the diag connector, for simple checks see that the brake lamps function when you press the brakes.

For the low rpm stumble, check the spark plugs - if they are super dupernium precious metal plugs - throw them out, you need copper items with no resistor - the resistors in your engine's ignition circuit are built into the connectors of the plugs. Ensure that no wiring is damaged.

do what xulfiqar says bro. he is the authority on this.
lemme share my doubts on this. your engine's breather pipers may also be damaged. my car had the same prob and it was resolved after those pipes were found to be broken/cracked.

@oklodhi ---- a list coming for you shortly

If its the 95 E300D, then the engine should be OM606.910 as original equipment, the E250D engine is called the OM605, with plastic intake manifold. 2.5 litre 5 cyl 20V DOHC., there is also another 5 cyl called the OM602 - its also 2.5 litre but is in SOHC configuration. Its the engine from the older W124 250D. - Quite lazy engine in NA form - as no RHD W124 diesel was turbo due to the steering box being in the way of the exhaust downpipe. The DOHC engines were NA in the W124 even with LHD.

Im sure you can determine the engine just by looking at it.

    stick to your lancer.

its the most comfortable car on the road right now...has a smoother ride than new civics, corollas, accords, markx's etc.

these old mercedes's dont have a ride quality comparable to lancer. people suggesting u to buy them are "fanboys", they'll defend mercedes no matter what...

take a test drive if possible so you know exactly what the difference is...
also, old cars can have lots of problems in pakistan, you cant find a good mercedes from 1980-90s. stick to what already works.

old mercs will run one ragged on maintenance. forget about it.
Age is a very high price to pay for maturity.
