Default TOYOTA CROWN BODY CHANGE 1987 to 1995

    Folks:

I am in the phase of buying Toyota Crown 1987 model body changed to 1995. I just need suggestions whether to buy it or not? Secondly if you suggest not to buy then please come up with legal reasoning.

By the way, why does everyone always discuss about Toyota Crowns only? Libra got it done to his Pajero.

your car will be customs intelligence magnet. traffic & common black shirts will not be a problem.

every time customs intel people spot and take car in custody for paper verification & forensic - will agree to all your legal documents etc etc insisting on forensic test or ' their catch '

choice is yours hassle net or peace of mind which ever is economical

dear Hassan, the court ruling that you are referring to was passed only for a particular car. it is not applicable in general. be aware, agents have used this ruling a lot to sell their ncp cars to be used in body change.

when you upgrade your car from an old model to a newer one, body change tax is applicable on it. in your case, you will have to pay around 3 lacs (could be a little less as well) and then and only then your car will be legal.

if customs catch ur car anywhere on the road, it is going to be confiscated unless you have the body tax payment receipts.

if you plan on fighting this rule, please do so. you might be able to save money but be prepared for at least a year's court fight consuming a lot of time and resulting in ruining you car.

once the body change tax is paid, no one can stop your car.

i have paid da tax of a crown and that of a jimny as well. jimny was stuck in customs yard for 10 months coz i also had the same thinking as urs.

A bit off the topic but i am surprised that almost 99% Army auctions jeeps weather CJ's or FJ's have major cut and weld in thier chasis and almost 80% of *6 wheelers trucks were extended by cut and weld to 10 wheeler , and no one bothers them and they are running smothly. but the moment one poor change his body of SJ410 ......he have to face the authorities ...logically cutting and extending the chasis is far big offence than changing the body which fit back on the original mountings. *
*So there must be some solid reasoning for this with the custom authorities to apply this.*

hmm very often as you move to any northern city like Naran/kaghan or any one you will see extended frames and i almost 100% of mazda trucks carrying Foam are extended by cut and weld. and all the dumpers 10 wheelers running are extended by cut and weld from original size . so things look very strange when comes to custom.

The trucks have a different category as it is a loading vehicle, the total GVWR is quite higher than a car, hence the foam carrying 1 ton highway trucks can get extended frames because its cargo is lighter and high volume.

This cannot be applied to a passenger car as there are no weight checks for them.

As I was informed by an excise and taxation person the body change permit is only for cargo vehicles or passenger vehicles that can carry 10 or more passengers (BUS) and which has been imported as a bus which has a separate frame and body. Doing this on a car should be technically allowed but the problem is that the custom duty structure in our country does not allow this as they apply duty even on luxury items. If this were fully legal - I can assure you that the next import batch would be busted Ford Crown Victorias from the ME and a boatload of Lincoln Town Car bodies - couple them together and you get a nice luxury car for extreme cheap price.
