Default Why aren't small diesel engines popular in Pakistan?

Just wondering why small diesel engine cars like the 1.4l D4D Toyota vitz are not being imported, it gives excellent fuel economy and with the fuel prices at what they are I thought they would be popular, I know diesel has quality issues in Pakistan but then how come hilux and prado D4D engines are successful.

There are a couple of reasons. First being the poor quality and dirty diesel fuel available in our country. This messes up the direct injection engines. Second is the high content of Sulfur.

The mechanics have a tendency of treating these engines like tractor engines.

The first two points are invalid - the last point is very valid and combine that with our "cheap mentality" car owners. For some oddball reason every car for a Pakistani car owner should only require oil change. They refuse to accept that something costly should ever be replaced in a car.

The noise seems to be the issue. My cousin had a charade, but the typical diesel engine noise was irritating.

firstly the charade was a 3cyl IDI engine - and most probably buggered up if in Pakistan. the modern DI diesels and any sensible manufacturers diesel engines are pretty quiet now, can only be heard from outside the car.The problem is the lack of expertise to repair such and even with the handful people actually repairing them the owners are not interested in parting with their money for parts, mostly because parts are 5 times more pricey than their 2C diesel - well they proceeded to eff it up with "sarviss station" anyway.

the best diesel engine in pakistan is a sarvis station, effing up cars since we came to know diesal turns the car's engine bay look black and shiny for the first 50m of the drive after the sarviss. Gaddi owner happily pays the sarviss wala for the "chass aa gayi" thing.

probably thats why small diesel engines are an epic failure in pk.

I have driven 2011 model 2.0 D, within city didnt feel any noise, but on highway after speed of 100, there was a continuous non stop bheeen sound. Bcaz of that noise i never went for a diesel engine. Dont have experience of low cc diesel engine so cant say abt these.
