    Default Odo meter reversing

the trend of reversing odometer is so common these days that according to my estimate atleast 30% of the people selling their cars have done it.
well it seems perfect. you run your car for 200k km.. want to sell it.. reverse the meter to 50k and voila you get a really nice price for the ride.
but i think its morally and ethically really wrong. and companies should take extra measures to prevent it.. like the ecu should short circuit if someone tried to reverse odo (in bigger cars not mehran etc as they dont have digital odo) or some other preventive measure..
because theres no way of knowing if the odo has been reversed.. what do you guys think about this

Drugs cause amnesia, and other things I can't remember

thats absolutely correct. Many cars sell slow if their meters are not tempered with. Trust me, I am experiencing the problem myself as I have not tempered my car's odo. I do have the resources but I will never do so.

One should use some common sense and compare the reading with car's physical condition. Check interior, exterior, suspension and drive of the car. It does tell lot of things.

high tech cars have a lot of back ups and their original odometer reading can always be checked even if you temper it.

on the other hand, technology has made things a lot more easy. Thanks to China.

There are instruments available now with which you can reprogram the ECU to reverse the odo. Options are available for BMW, Benz, Audi and Porsche even let alone Toyota and Honda.

buyers need to change mentality first
cars with high miles end up with dealers who buy them cheaper then market price
reverse the same cars odo, and sell them abv market price even in same cases
Life is short and very unpredictable just like a Quarter mile .....

This practice is done mostly by car dealers, but its difficult to find if ODO is reversed or not, one cant exactly judge from physical condition. I personally didnt trust on ODOs reading i just ignore abt readings and focus on physical apperaence and looks,

If you ask a dealer, why do they temper the odo? His answer, "bhai sub chalta hai, gari bechni bhi to ha" or a similar typical answer. Customer can judge from cars physical condition, but cars used in foreign countries are much clean and neat. Coz they don't have Khotas, and other hazards on the road. Like we do. (Pan shop on the road, Balloon Cart, Chat, Dehi balle, etc.)

Yes they attach a chip to it and you can get ur desired milage but this chip system is being used for Japanese imports. Its the buyer's mentality which needs to bee changed as one of my brothers mentioned earlier

Here in pesh they temper ODO by just pulling out meter, and then attach it with computer , and will do what readings u want, this whole process takes 15 mins including fitting of meter @1000-1500 depends.

    One tip which i find useful to some extent;
If u find a ODO reading with a leading zero at extreme left (like 050000) then it tells that vehicle had gone past 6 digit mileage. u can change 150000 to 050000 but that "ZERO" will not go away

clocking in legal terms mount to fraud and its a crime, but its common to deceive others in Pakistan. I dont know how many people keep the records of service history stamps, receipts, these can help to consistent mileage of a car. Its also about time Pakistan should introduce some car health check for 3 or more years old car and set some basic safety and exhaust checks for all vehicles on the road. These test will also keep mileage record if they linked to central system of a govt agency, registration transfer should also keep the mileage record. Even the physical mileage has been tweaked, it can show its mileage history from its registration and testing records. but i guess thats too much to ask far!

Well i agree with you as an japanese auction car importer. In my case i am importing 4 grade cars and u can see my ads with auction sheets. But you know people dont want good grade cars, they just need a navigation or alloy wheels.Wise people dont get cheated buying an japanese auction car,as they can get actual status of the car.(True Mileage,True Grading). And it does not mean that i am the only paatay khan importing 4 grade cars.To my experience importing 4 grade car means very low profit margin or sometimes loss.Thats what karobar means.I can't stop people tempering odometers or making fake auction sheets, the only thing i can do is to give genuine grading cars.Alhumdulillah.

Yes yar this thing has become too much common in our country. But final judgement regarding this issue (before buying a vehicle) should be made on physical outlook of car and performance ... The car in most cases speaks of itself.
