Default Fuel(petrol) efficient car for daily use

What are the most fuel(petrol) efficient cars for daily use.

For daily drive to and from university (~50 km).
Which car is suitable? It should have good resale.(most important thing after fuel consumption.)

Dont have a budget right now.

And secondly how much does CVT/auto/manual tranny makes a difference to economy.

In petrol efficiency, no match with manual transmission Honda city - iDSI (2003 to 2008 model). Absolutely no issue with parts, maintenance and resale. Just go for it u wont regret.
