Default How To Check if Meter is Tampered or Reversed?

I am interested in buying a used civic 2005 or 2006. I have shortlisted 2 of them and I want to know how can I check if their meter is tampered with or has been reversed to show false readings? Is there any technique or part or any seal which I have to see inside the engine?

Or if there is any good mechanic in Lahore you know of that can go with me and check the meter?

PLEASE TELL ME WHAT SHOULD I OFFER THE SELLER OF THESE CARS? Can you guys tell me the suitable offer for both cars? I am a little confused as it will be my first car

i don't think a good mechanic can tell... mostly what i have heard is, they change some chip on the back side of the meter... probably that might be the indication... else the condition of pedals, engine bay, shields, headlights, spare tire condition can get u some idea....

u can post the pics, i might be able to assist u though, [for totally FREE]

remember millage doesn't matter much if the vehicle is well maintained...
people who use Highbeams.. once day would suffer too bigtime. People who drive slow on fast lanes, remember one day a vehicle carryin ur son, dad might get late to hospital coz people like u. underaged driving will land u in bigtime trouble one day or the other.. And the Blue indication light on ur speedometer denotes "High Beams"

Check the Pedals!!! if they are worn out or in rough condition.... this is the first sign to check!!!

Test Drive both the cars, if engine is in good condition, just go ahead!!! Civic doesnt say anything if it is well maintianed!

    Ask for maintenance history...
    log book etc.
you can judge mileage from there if it is available.

lols...what if the previous owners had pedal covers??? there is no sure shot way to tell if the meter is tempered. u need to check the overall condition of the car and its drive. a good mechanic might tell u that the car is good to buy and also honda engines can last over 350k kms easily if maintained.

That's the main thing other than vehicle if its first owner

other than that i have seen 2005/06 civics around 250000 kms driven which were better than a 40k-60k kms driven civic in most of the cases.

Don't go for mileage, see if its maintained properly.

dont go on mileage. just check the condition, if condition is good and well maintained, buy that. this car is 73k driven, looking well maintained. what about a car driven only 15k, but the owner never change the oil.

But the thing is, demand should be proportional or reasonable to how much car is driven. That is what I also think is a good point while buying. A friend of mine said that there is some sort of seal or chip placed at the back side of meter. If the seal is broken, means the chip is replaced and so you know that the meter is tempered. But the thing is neither he nor I know where it is located and none of the mechanics I know can figure it out if it is tempered or not. However, my CEO in office told me of workshop somewhere near defence. There is a person whom he knows that can identify the meter tempering but then I doubt that the owners of both these cars might not allow me to drive to that workshop in defence just to see if it is good or not.

i think you should check, the dashboard, steering and doors sides tells the story how much car has been used, rest drive and feels is the best way to check as ODO reading some time can be very deceiving.

2nd car seems confirmed meter reversed. I guess it's standing at some showroom and looking at gear lever and handbrake height. It seems to be driven more than the current reading.

Look closely at the screws which hold the meter in place. If they look like they have been opened, the meter might have been tampered.

    Mohtaram Adeel Sahib,
It is not very difficult to tell if the odometer has been rolled back or not. The condition of the car itself tells how much it is driven. Look at both the interior and exterior and then match it with the odometer reading. You don't even have to test-drive the vehicle to gather how much it is driven. Just look at the condition of the exterior and interior and you will make out how many miles it has clocked. Just get it inspected by an expert who can make that out.

    Regards.
