Angry TOYOTA COROLLA X ( Crash investigation)

    Salam dear pakwheelers!

i have car crash investigation for you guys

    THE HAPPENING:

my dad's friend has a TOYTA COROLLA X in dubai.last night it went through a serious ( mysterious accident) and the reasons are very deceptive to an ordinary person who heard them.actually what happened is that the car was parked
outside a mall (dont know the name though).when they entered the car, started it and put the car to Drive mode ( auto-tranny),it suddenly jumped(accelerated) and hit a nearby wall with full force and got TOTALED.(thankfully it didnt hit any nearby vehicles or people who were there at the time of happening).the driver and the side passenger got serious injuries.

what could be the possible reasons for this accident.was it

    1) they had seat belts on but the air bags werent deployed.
2)the foot brake was out of order
    3)the accelerator sensor was mall-functioned

One has to rule out medical conditions as they can be a cause aswell. Maybe it is the accelerator problem which caused the famous toyota recall few years back.

If one has evidence and can prove than maybe. But it was mostly the problem of american models.

just copied it from another source...a person having a similar sort of problem
Hello Vincent, about two weeks ago after driving for about 25 miles, first 20 miles, highway, the next five miles local traffic, I came to a red light and tried to stop. The car wouldn't stop and continue to roll pass the red light, even with my foot on the brake. I got panic and shifted the car to park. TOYOTA COROLLA X ( Crash investigation) - mechanic
I was told I shouldn't have done that because of the possible damage to the parking pin and transmission. Luckily, neither happened. The next day I took the car to a mechanic and had it inspected.
The brake was fine. The mechanic said the stopping problem was caused by the throttle body sticking and he proceeded to clean it. One week later, the same stopping problem happened again, coincidentally, at a few street lights before the last time, also after driving for about 25 miles.
This time I shifted the car to neutral and was able to stop the car. But the engine was revving very high, to about 4,500 rpm for 15 to 20 seconds. I took the car back to the same mechanic. He tried to duplicate the same stopping problem and wasn't successful.
He didn't want to go ahead and replace the throttle body because he was not 100% sure that would solve the problem. Other people told me it could be a computer problem. Do you have any suggestions as to what and where should I look?

    • 1990 Toyota Corolla
    • Automatic transmission
    • 118,000 miles
    • Fuel injected
    • P/S, A/C
    • Timing belt changed 3? month ago
    • Boot Axial changed 3? month ago

Thanks very much for your time.
    Christopher

    A. I don't blame him for not wanting to replace the throttle body without being 100% sure that is the problem. And of course without being able to duplicate the problem, he can't really test anything.
I would suspect the Idle Air Control Valve (IACV) would be the more likely culprit here. A sticking IACV could very well cause the problem you describe. If you're going to gamble on something to fix the problem, that would be my bet.
Another thing I would check is the accelerator cable. Make sure it is in good shape with no chaffing or kinks and that it moves freely without binds.

I hope you have insurance, police reports. Go to the Toyota dealer. Is your car still in warranty? I am not expert but scanning the car system might reflect some information. For air bags to deploy the car there is a certain thresh hold speed.. normally 25 or 30 Mph.. not sure exactly. If its below that air bags will not deploy.. As it was parking lot.. the car might not sped that much but the car got bodily damage due to an impact and the car own weight hitting a solid object that is a wall.

The brake and accelerator malfunction can be investigated by going into ECU I believe. again experts can shed light on this. Sorry for the loss.

Corolla X have a shift-safety, It will NEVER shift to D or R without brake pedal pressed / engaged no matter if parking brake was / is functional or not.
some pieces are missing in the submitted case puzzle. PW users having Corolla X please confirm my submission.

What has shift safety got to do woth it? He put it in gear with brake pressed and then the car accelerated and as happens in many cases he might have panicked and could not press the brakes in time.

you solved the case - it is matter of panic.

he may request Police & RTA for forensic of vehicle at his own cost for claim settlement with Insurance, they may play games for settling the claim of PANIC as cause of accident

No i did not solve the case. The car did accelerate after being put in gear as told by the OP so that needs to be investigated because it should not have done this. Even if you do not press the brakes on a static vehicle and the car is in drive mode; it rolls forward slowly and does not accelerate sharply.

    Well here is my opinion:
Tell your uncle to contact the security guys of that mall and get video recordings of the parking lot.
My hunch is that someone tempered with the car in the parking lot in an attempt to kill your uncle and his family
Or the car had already been tampered at his garage
Did your uncle get the car serviced from any mechanic after the Dubai motor inspection, if yes then that mechanic may be the culprit.
But in the end i would say that there are many possibilities and the car's computer might have malfunctioned due to which brakes were disabled and rpm's suddenly increased.
    Get the ECU checked

with factory setup of vaccum pipes intact & throttle sensor correctly trimmed vehicle will not move at under 1000 rpm. my 22 years old old school auto trans corolla with aircon engaged does not need brake pedal depressed all the time at stop light. it moves at touch of throttle i.e 1100 RPMs. I'd seriously recommend your friends to contact Traffic Police & RTA for forensic of destroyed vehicle.
