Default Question: Black Color / Damer below car to prevent rust Good or back

    As Salam,
I usually have to park my car in Clifton and C-view area, and i am concerned about rust, my coligs have worst rusts developed under there car... !

I have recently bought Mehran 2011 VX , freinds have suggested to apply black color or damer color under vehicle. local service station is doing this for PKR 3000.

Should i go for it . or its bad.. ! someone have any experiences doing this ??

to prevent rusting you need a 3 step approach - forget the coal tar - its useless.

the supplies you need are 1/2 to 3/4 kg wax (bees wax = best otherwise regular candle wax also can work) - some light mineral oil about 1/2 litre - any oldest school engine oil and some kerosene oil - about 1 litre, mix em up and leave alone for 4 days. (the wax should be about equal to the oil

a garden spray pump (the thing maali uses to spray your flowers with pesticide and a long plastic pipe with closed end - punch a few holes in the end to make a spray end.

    a container of 3M undercoat.

remove the interior door cards from the doors and their plastic sheets too, then remove the bumpers and lights, fully wash the car at a high pressure facility and now remove the rubber plugs you see in the rear fender wells and push your plastic wand in there connected to the garden sprayer with oil and spray the mix in there - dont flood it you are only coating it. (install the rubber plugs back)

spray the mix in the door cavities too and also in the bonnet frame and boot lid cavity - some even up where the glass seal is. take wand and insert it into the cavities left by the removal of head lights and tail lights. This gives a good wax coating inside the body where you normally dont clean.

    spray in the doors too.

lift car and tape off the areas you dont want coated - make sure the door sill (footboard) taping is done such that you get undercoat about 2 inches on the panel. Apply the coat to the metal parts only, if your old coating is soggy from the sarviss stashun aail isspray then you need to scrape that off first.

    assemble car

the 3M product used to be available in Karachi, it was about Rs 1100/can ten years ago. It was a spray can and you just aimed and sprayed away.

the 3M item is 50 times better than the cheapie rustoleum. The biggest mistake people do is that they think that applying stuff over the rust stops it, - it doesnt, rust is like cancer but it can be treated unlike human cancer.

first you stop the rust dead and make it inert so it does not react further then cover it up.

the aail sarviss at the favorite teyshun every weekend has killed more cars than you can count, the oil softens the undercoat which then allows water to get between it and the metal and eventually rusting it out. Salt is worse (karachi seaside) as it attracts water. Salt lodged in little areas that have bare metal rust faster than you can say "rust"

how would you make the rust inert, i use some vinegar on the rust to pickle the metal, but it seems too mild to me

you use rust converter - not vinegar. There are products available nowadays that are straight on paintable type rust converters - the best being POR-15 - just clean the area of loose rust, sand/wirewheel it down - cover with POR let dry and then primer + paint it.

rustoleum rust reformer is no good, because it is black anyways, it doesn't only make the rust black, no way of knowing if the rust is neutralized
