    Default Jeep Cherokee Build

    Assalam o Aleikum.

I have an opportunity to purchase a Jeep Cherokee 1997 for 3.5 lacs (which i presume is a good deal)

The car is in so-so condition.... mechanically i can give it a 7, no work in the shocks department, gear was smooth, steering whell also smooth. the body needs total paint. new wind screens and other minor cosmetic stuff.

the deal is that I want to change the original 4.0 engine to a 2.5. The goal is to keep it fun to drive for a little off roading, yet keep it real with the fuel consumption.

I am assuming that a good toyota engine and gear should be around 125-150 k
and along with the other bells and whistles, say another 150k, so the car should be in sexy condition in about 6 or 6.5 lacs.

    my question to you guys....

Q1: Is the budget that I am imagining ok?
Q2: which engine will be suitable for such a project?
Q3: In in Karachi and a few people tell me that parts are difficult to locate, while others say sher sha is full of Cherokee parts...

comments freely brothers. thanks in advance.

The mighty 4 liter is a legendary engine else where in th world, it pulls like a train. Please don't ruin the truck by putting in anything Japanese. Goras love the 4 liter for a reason. It was originally designed and made by AMC in the 60's, there's a reason why it's still being used by Chrysler in their Jeeps. Give this a read please before butchering the mopar:

Please don't mess with the 4.0 brother, If you plan for a swap, I'd suggest to go for something simple. Cherokees are not well understood by the local mechanics, and you'd have some balancing issues with a lighter engine I guess, The only SUV i'd suggest someone for a SWAP is the KIA sportage. the 2.2 3C-T sits like a charm in it, If you decide not to go for this deal, do let me know, I'm more than willing to buy such a beauty.

Dont ruin this beauty with swaping ,you dont even know what this 4.0 can do in any sense, this 4.0 Cherokee is especially used to climb steep up on the deserted mountains !

Thank you all for your suggestions/comments.

As much as i would like to retain the 4.0 litre, I'm constrained by economics. The 4.0 will put a big hole in my wallet each time i would want to drive it, and that would render it useless for me. As it is i do not intend to drive it to K2 base camp or across Thar. As I mentioned, just some light off roading. Secondly, the same jeep is also offered in 2.5 litre, so that means the curb weight in question (1500 kg) can adequetely be handled by a 2.5 litre engine.

Im sorry that i didnt mention earlier... but the 4.0 original engine doesnt seem to me in top shape... I drive the jeep and could not feel the raw power i was expecting with that size of engine.... I own a Mark 2 Grande 2002 and i was mentally comparing the 4.0 Jeep with the 2.0 Toyota Mark 2... and i could feel that the later was much more powerful. Both vehicles have more of less the same curb weight! This could be becoz of the bad engine...

I am planning to install a 2.5 litre engine. preferably VVT. kindly suggest.

A guy I know has installed a Supra engine in his 3 Door Nissan Safari and it was great to drive! the power felt very adequete as well. Thankyou brothers all of you for ur valuable suggestions, and I hope u will help me in making this ride, what befitting my needs. Once again Im sorry guys... the 4.0 litre has gotta go.

    JazakAllah khair.

It's quite heavy on fuel. Gives 4kmpl.
But the driving pleasure compensates that.

    Pros
Love driving it . very responsive throttle.
    Amazing acceleration
    Love doing burnout (sometimes only)
    Heavy, engine sound
    Perfect for off roading
Ample boot space (boot space can be extended by folding rear seats)
Full leather interior makes it even more appealing
    Electronically controlled front seats
    Auto transmission and 4x4
    Power steering etc etc

    Cons
    High on fuel
    Not a daily driver
Suspension is not comfy (slight bump
    Moves the whole vehicle)
Sourcing for parts can be an issue
Headliner upholstery wears off once in a blue moon
@shafi8189 has personally driven the vehicle. Let's see what he has to tell.

ok boys... theres good news and there is not-so-good news (thankfully no bad news )

Im retaining the 4.0 litre. but thinking of instaling CNG. I want to keep this a s a daily driver as well. i dont beleive in having any car as a show peice.... if i cant enjoy it daily, i dont want it.

So, keeping in light 2 factors about economy, i am considering to install CNG.
    1. LNG will be arriving soon, it will be still more cheaper than petrol and CNG. and 2. many ppl have told me that CNG works very nicley with bigger engines.

    please comment. and thanks
