    Default Mercedes vs Toyota

    Hello,

I'am in the lookout for a second car. I've shortlisted three cars, a toyota crown S150, a Mercedes-Benz W126, and trying to get my budet up somehow and get a W140.

I know that out of these the W140 is probably the best, but i wanted to know which of the two, crown or W126, is better.

for Mercedes i'd recommend member @Haroon_Tarar
it will be bit tricky to locate a Toyota Crown in its original engine / suspension setup

Well I would advice you get a w126 a good clean car these day come from 7 to 10lacs..
Crown is pretty old and busted vehicle.
As far was w140 is concerned its a white elephant and I would not advice you to get that unless its super clean and such a vehicle is not available but if you find one expect it be be above 2 million.

I have found one, its a Royal Saloon G spec model, it has the original engine and suspension. I has has done 262,000 km but the engine felt and sounded strong and healthy. I cannot find a good W126. I've seen about 3, one was rusted from the inside and everything creeked, the other two had toyota engines fitted in them

The first car that my father bought, an embassy auctioned '92 cressida. It's sitll with us since 2001. The car came home with my dad the day the advertisement was in the paper, he did not take a let it out of sight and bought it there and then. For these beauties I want to take some time and compare the two, see which is better as I need to find a good clean car. My father plans to keep it like the Cressida

a mercedes benz W140 chassis is an excellent vehicle, it was built as "cost no object".

The issue you will face is that the "cost no object" would be transferred to you. Think of it like there are 2 toyota crown's packed in the W140 - its missed maintenance (which is guaranteed in Pakistan) would be very expensive. It also requires the mechanic working on to study the service manual thoroughly first. There are some oddball procedures which have to be followed for any repair to last.

the W126 is like stone age compared to the W140 - all of the electrics and controls are analog and it will be carrying a ton of vacuum systems to match. The body build is nice - but due to missed/wrong maintenance it may creak/crack or even rust.

a toyo crown is more like an american car - just a bit smaller and silly looking.

I totally agree with you. I have been through the maintenance problems with my car, We've learned the lesson quite well. Nowadays, if you want to get something right, do it yourself.

The W126 is stoneage compared to the W140, but like the W140 it has presence, character. The build quality I'm sure is second to none in both of them.

The problem is finding a good clean car for a reasonable amount of money. If a car, be it any make, if maintained properly will last for decades.

Saw another W126, was repainted, door hinges were rusted and just painted on, seats felt like they has no springs. I asked whats the demand and I was shocked, 1.1 million for that.

If I were looking to buy a MB that had character and wanted it in S class chassis type then W140 - with atleast the 4.2 litre V8, The W126 is surely nice built but people in Pakistan have raped them to eternity with engine swaps and desi jugaar electric work.

We may very well be experts but making modifications to a car like the MB W126, fitting it with toyota engines and doing shoddy cheap work is not what im looking for. For me a clean genuine car will do.

I've got a '92 Cressida, bought it in 2001. Only car in the family, runs beautifully because my father has kept it stock. The only thing aftermarket in it are the rims and the headunit, nothing else. The 22 year old paint has faded, and has dents in someplaces but everywhere I go people ask me or my father if we want to sell it due to its originality. This is what Im looking for.

Absolutely true, people here have not respected the W126.

A W140 with the 4.2L V8 is hard to find, I've seen S500's and one S600, but those are waaaay out of my budget.

the S600 requires you to be making super great income, expect about 3000 euro per year to keep the car on the road, it surely is a magnificent and majestic giant but it requires "ooncha darr"

the S500 is a good choice provided its clean and good.

I would suggest going for the last incarnations of the W140 (with the S before the number) and not the SE, SEL type names. The later cars are easier to diagnose electrically, they also have the electric shift NAG1 gearboxes - yes they are prone to the front planetary bushing failure which ruins the gearbox - but you can have it downed and the bushing replaced very easily and economically. It will then work for a long time. The way a NAG1 behaves is downright amazing.

I'am looking for a post-96 W140, as I've come to the conclusion that when it comes out of production car, get the models in the last years of production. I'm currently looking for an S320 as that is a bit in my budget.

Err.. what is your budget? that will help people in suggesting what you can buy. There are a few 280S in W126 in Pindi, clean ones too, but they are asking a bit on the higher side
