Default In USA, need suggestions for a cheap car.

For regular commute to college 6-12 km daily.
I would prefer something that will also help me while moving furniture.
    And no coupes.

Budget is around $3500. Have no idea about US market so suggestions are welcome. What kind of vehicles can I get in this range?

    Edit:
Actually now that I have bought my furniture I see that most of it can be disassembled and the rest can easily fit in a car. So I dont really need a truck.

    ford ranger 2.3

behtreen pickup truck - you can move loads of stuff around too.

in 3500 dollars you can get quite a lot of choice - you can get all sorts of small/medium sedans - but as you said you wanted to move stuff around, a pickup truck is nice.

you can find older model of Toyota 4Runner - hilux surf in that money too, Nissan Xterra (a bit beat up), mazda B series pickup etc. Ford Ranger is tough as nails and not too expensive either.

Explorer - good option but limited space if you want to move stuff. Truck is more suitable as Xulfiqar bhai suggested.

Other cars you are looking at, I would say the Altima, but again your requirement of moving stuff will not be covered by it.

In the price and manufacture year range I am looking at there are a lot of Fords and VW here. Some KIA, Nissan and Hyundai. Few Toyotas (mostly camry) and hondas (mainly accord).

If I look at 2000-2003 I get some BMWs etc too. But I dont want to buy an old car and brands like Jaguar and BMW etc since I am under the impression that they will have expensive maintenance.

Get a elantra 2012 for around 6-8k , should depend on what state you're in there relatively cheaper in FL. find one under 150k miles.

the problem with corolla and camry is that they are used by poor college students who buy it because they are told it doesnt require maintenance. The resultant is that they literally destroy the car by driving it to its death and then put an ad for it to sell it.

The accord and civic follow closely behind, older sentra, altima and maxima are also quite in the same boat - except they will die and force a repair order to the owner.

Dont go for beat up german/british cars if you are not accustomed in owning them.

my vote still is for a small pickup truck like a ranger, dakota, S10 etc. trucks are heavy duty and very long life.

Why don't you go for leasing, and get a new car from them?
You can pay such little amount in 3 years time, but the thing is your mileage is so less that it won't bother you much. Leased cars are restricted to some mileage. Let's say 10,000miles yearly. It will be enough for you. My vote is for lease car for you, but is your credit score good or bad?
There are some dealerships there that also lease cars on bad credit score.

Bhai i just recently came back from states after spending 6 years there. My advice to you will be just buy anything of Toyota or Honda. They both are reliable and economical since labour in states is crazy expensive. Other cars especially Ford, chevy, kia are not reliable since when you are buying an old car.
    Good Luck brother
