I would not think that its the responsibilty of the front driver not to have brakes pressed hard . Its the responsibility of the rear driver to have a minimum safe distance,,,,,,for example if U R driving on the road and a child just happen to run from curb and came infront of U then U R gonna apply the brakes to the full extent, but if the rear driver is driving responsibly with a minimum safety distance than he would have enough time to apply the brakes and avoid any impact. Lets say if U R driving at a speed of 50 km/h than try to have atleast a distance of 30 feet from the car infront. In this way U'll B the incharge of the situation not under the situation.
Therefore, I think @spectra was right and it was the sheer responsbility of the rear driver who caused the collision.
P.S : Never drink, smoke or use cell phone during driving.
