Thats a good question.
I'll take a shot at it. Indiginization is the process of gradually making a product in your own country, completely. It usually refers to industrial products. Most 3rd world countries have been on this path of industrial development since their independence from European colonial powers. Many have attained high level of local industrial base, others are still working in this area.
Pakistan, also is working on process of indiginization. There are many products , that are now being made in Pakistan, which we previously imported. The example would be of many elettrical goods. The Electric Fans, bicycles, tube lights, etc.
Pakistan got almost no industry at times of partition. Everything was imported.
Now, by grace of God, we are making many products in our own homeland.
In defense industry we have achieved tremendous indiginization. Augusta Submarine, is now being made in Pakistan, with almost all local parts.
Many Frigates and ships are being made locally in Pakistan at KSEW, Karachi Shipping and Engineering Works.
Mushak airplane, piston engine, turbo prop. aircraft is being made 100% in Pakistan.
All the ACs, refrigerators, microwave ovens, juicers blenders, water pumps, TVs, etc. are now being made in Pakistan by local Pakistani companies.
Now, the automobile industry is working hard at making 100% Pakistani Car. Revo is almost at a point where it will be, God willing, by 2007 made 100% indiginously.
Indiginization is a long/complicated process. It required alot of capital, big market, willingness of the consumers to go along with local product, when they also have a choice of selecting the Internationally proven, top of the line, Japanese cars. It helps if the government puts some restrictions on the highly developed, product of the Japanese industry, but now, you have this new component of globalization to contend with. Those countries that had already attained the indiginization goals thru process of deletion, are at a better position to open up their markets to the global WTO approved rules and regulations. Pakistan is a dynamic country, we will be able to pass thru this stage, successfully. We already have 95% localization in Tractor industry.
Those people in their 30s now, can well remember how in 1970s and 1980s we were looking forward to a fully made Pakistani Car.
During 1990s, political mismanagement has derailed that hope for a little while, but now in decades of the 0s, 2000 onward, under the leadership of Gen. Pervaiz Musharaf, the people are re-awakening to the hope of progressive Pakistan, which makes its own Cars, and other products.
We are on our way to achieving that target and Adam Revo is the first concrete step toward that direction.
