Honda's Brio takes aim at Maruti's Swift
Bangkok: Honda on Tuesday unveiled a prototype of its new small car, the Brio, at the 27th Thailand International Motor Expo 2010. The introduction of the car is a significant step for Honda in rapidly growing Asian markets. The prototype unveiled on Tuesday is meant for the Thai market, but it won’t differ significantly for India. Honda had showcased a concept version at the Auto Expo in January.

The Brio is an attempt by Honda to enter a segment dominated by Maruti Suzuki Swift. When launched in India before the 2011 festive season, the car will sport a starting price of less than Rs 5 lakh. It will be the first time that Honda enters the volume segment and will pit the Brio against not just the Swift, but the Ford Figo, Volkswagen Polo, Nissan Micra, Hyundai i10 and the Toyota Etios hatchback (which will be introduced early next year).
The car will be exported to other countries from India. Takanobu Ito, the president & CEO of Honda Motor Company, said: "The new model is critical to our business in Asia." Developed to conform to Thailand's Eco Car programme initiated by the government, the Brio is designed to meet strict emission norms and fuel efficiency targets. At 3.61 metres in length, it's a tad shorter than the Chevrolet Beat and Swift, but a little longer than the i10. Honda's small car will feature a 1,200 cc petrol engine, like the one on the Honda Jazz.
"We plan to begin production of the Brio with 80 per cent localisation," said Ito. "To introduce the Brio at a very reasonable price, we've had to do things in production and purchasing that have not been done before, including more Indian components and newer supply sources," he said.
The Brio will be built at Honda Siel's facility in Greater Noida where it has a 100,000-unit-a-year capacity. Currently, around 65 per cent of capacity is utilised to assemble the Jazz hatchback, City, Civic and Accord sedans. Honda Siel has a second plant in Tapukara in Rajasthan that currently builds components for its existing models. Ito said the Brio's production could later shift to Tapukara, depending on demand.
"The biggest learning for us has been localisation," said Ito when questioned about how the Brio hopes to achieve a sub-Rs 5-lakh pricetag. Takashi Nagai, president & CEO of Honda Siel, said while components such as crankshafts and conrods were produced at Greater Noida, Brio's aluminium components such as the cylinder block and heads would be sourced from its plant in Rajasthan.
On the possible split in its joint venture with the Hero Group over Hero Honda in the two-wheeler space, Ito refused to comment. "Our bigger worry is to match up to demand for our two-wheelers in India," he said.

Some engine details(:Honda Brio to be small car for India)
To be called Brio, the car codenamed 2CV will be built at Honda's plant in Noida as only 65 per cent of the 100,000 capacity plant is being utilised. Depending on demand, Honda can move production to its facility at Alwar in Rajasthan at a short notice, but when and how that will happen remains to be seen.
The Brio will be powered by a three-cylinder petrol engine, a derivative of the four-cylinder unit found on the Jazz but with a cylinder less. Swept volume of this new-for-Brio engine is expected to be 900cc, with a power rating of around 70 bhp. It may utilise Honda's i-VTEC system or dump it altogether for a regular valvetrain, details of which will be shared after the car's launch tomorrow. Like other Honda models, ABS and airbags is expected to be standard on all models, but that might mean that the base model which is expected to start around Rs 5 lakh will be completely bereft of any notable features.
Honda may also offer the 1.2-litre Jazz engine on the Brio at a later stage and is mulling placing a new 1.5-litre diesel engine in the Brio and City as Honda finally considers making its move into the ultra competitive diesel segment. Honda is mum about pricing for now, but we expect prices to be in the region of Rs 5 to 6.5 lakh for the 900cc offering. With the launch on November 30 and bookings to begin in 2011, a lot will be riding on Honda's shoulders. Whether it finally makes it big in the small car space remains to be seen.
