I have been following news about the imported vehicles and local car makers. I am trying to get an idea what an ordinary person thinks about imported vehicles vs local car makers.
My opinion is that import should remain open but with better check & balance system. It is a fact that imported vehicles are better grade in quality, features and safety options compared to the local ones. That is the main reason consumers are attracted toward used imported cars over local brand new cars. For example, Vitz vs Suzuki Swift, Mira vs Mehran/Coure. Now Hybrids are in as well, thats new technology. At the same time, importers are abusing the import policy and over charging consumers for these cars.
Now, as far the local makers are concerned. I 100% agree with the fact that local industry play a vital role supporting economy and creating jobs. At the same time, the local car makers should compare their quality, features, and safety ratings with imported cars (Let say Mehran 2007 with Mira 2007?). Then the prices are skyhigh and consumer has to make advance payment and wait for 6 months to get the car. (Calculate the interest for 6 months and see the figure). Another failure of the local makers is the continue production of same shape over the years for example Mehran, Bolan etc. Nothing has changed in these models started in late 80's. Bring some change?
Also, compare Pakistani corolla with international model, let say North American models. Look at the prices and features and compare same model year. Go to this link from toyota.com shows corolla variations and prices (At the moment US$19060). Convert these prices into Pak Rupess with today's rate and the features with High end Pakistani car Toyota Altis Auto vs Corolla S featured at this web page : 2013 Toyota Corolla Trim And Prices - One more thing, consumers in North America does not have to wait for 6 months to get their cars. So, if the Indus Motor Company (IMC) (also known as Habib Group reading this article, please pay attention and bring something comparable in quality, price and features for the Pakistan consumers. Of course you want to compete and want to keep the jobs for the people. Also, stop taking Extra payment for immediate delivery of the vehicles. Start a fair practice that favors consumers, rather then blaming import policy for your own weaknesses.
