I am not a technical person and can't say what the problem might be but let me share my experience. About 2 months ago I went to Malam Jabba with my family. When I reached the top and got out I heard water boiling type sound from the under the bonnet. Opened it and found water spilling from the hole in reservoir bottle but surprisingly temperature gauge was at normal position where it normally stays. Soon fan turned on too but after a minute or two fan turned off as its automatic. Still when I pressed the accelerator water spilled out while needle stayed at its usual position. Later took it to a mechanic when I came back to Mangora. He said headgaskit is gone. I was like what the heck, car has done only 56k and properly maintained, how can it happen. I asked him why the needle showed normal temperature and he had no answer. Took it to 2 others and they repeated the same thing. But I didn't believe them coz I knew I never abuse my car and treat it nicely so it couldn't be the case. Anyways I came back to Lahore like that. Took it to my trust worthy mechanic. He heard the whole story, checked the car and then asked me to bring a new radiator cap. It was changed and problem is gone. A small problem of a faulty radiator cap was diagnosed as messed up headgaskit by 3 different brilliant 'Ustaad Gs'.
Moral of the story is that one can't trust the 'Ustaad G' mechanic blindly. Your car was designed by the manufacturer to be driven on automatic fan. When mechanic asks you to keep the fan direct, ask him why? If it heats up on automatic fan then instead of turning it to direct fan, try to find the root cause of the heat up problem. Putting it to automatic mode doesn't solve the problem, it just masks it.
