April 2006
Built off a shortened version of DaimlerChrysler’s LX architecture (Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum and Charger), the Challenger Concept marks a return of the Challenger. When the original Challenger was introduced in 1970, it was intended to be a Ford Mustang competitor. If the concept car makes it to production, it too will be a direct competitor with the Mustang and should be priced accordingly—low $20,000s to about $35,000 for a 425-hp, SRT8 version. Exterior styling borrows heavily from the 1970 model but modern touches abound. Large 20- and 21-inch wheels fill the wheelwells and cover massive brakes. Large rectangular exhaust pipes peek out from under the rear bumper. Under the hood is SRT’s 6.1-liter V-8 with 425 horsepower. The engine is hooked up to a six-speed manual transmission, a first for the LX platform. Although production plans were not announced, if the Challenger is approved for production, it is still likely 18-24 months away from a Dodge showroom.
July 2006
Chrysler will build a production version of the Dodge Challenger coupe with the first vehicles arriving in showrooms in early 2008, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The car debuted as a retro-styled concept car in January at the Detroit auto show and drew raves from enthusiasts, according to another story in the Detroit News.
Chrysler plans to build the Dodge Challenger on the same platform as its rear-drive Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger, which are built in Brampton, Ontario.
The concept Challenger has a 116-inch wheelbase, six inches longer than the original and it's two inches wider. Presumably, the production version will be similarly sized.
Chrysler's top sales and marketing executive, Joe Eberhardt, has said in the past that a production version of the Challenger could be priced slightly higher than the Ford Mustang, which has a starting price of between $19,000 and $26,000 depending on engine choice and other options.
Chrysler will make fewer than 50,000 Challengers a year, Chrysler Chief Tom LaSorda LaSorda said.
