Saw this today. There was terrible traffic due to this accident. The distance which normally takes 10 minutes took more than 1 hour due to diversion.Apparently the driver of BMW seems missed the central barrier and hit head on. The crash barriers are very important in this case to absorb and dissipate the energy. It is also a safety feature for Highways. Otherwise a crash directly onto the concrete barrier can be much more serious and fatal. Also these are important to safe structures from damage. You will always see crash cushions near toll booths, bridge columns..There are various types of crash barriers, like drums filled with sand, or this one which is telescopic with neoprene within segments.
This particular crash cushion works like this

Bad.... Its always very sad to see a crash. I hope the occupants are safe!
Seems occupants will be safe If in seat-belts. But they might have been shaken well...
To me, the BQE always seemed like a not-so-great urban expressway in terms of quality, on and off ramp design etc.
and BQE is the major artery. A traffic jam/ accident means ripple effects everywhere in the surroundings. some stretches of BQE are country's busiest ones. I always avoid travelling via BQE.. :S
Me too, whenever I could. Sometimes I think the posted speed limit on most stretches of the BQE is higher than it should be, given the many curves there are.
I wish one can even touch the posted speed limits. Its always a mess there.
