Toyota unveiled a concept FTI sports car in this year Detroit Auto show (https://www.pakwheels.com/forums/cool-classic-cars-latest/227871-2014-detroit-auto-show-web-coverage). It is expected that that project will spawn both a replacement for the BMW Z4 and a long-awaited Toyota Supra successor based on the FT-1 Concept.
The source is reported to have said that two versions are planned: an entry-level model powered by Toyota's new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a range-topping hybrid model combining a 2.5-liter V-6 with an electric drive system. The latter is said to develop in excess of 400 horsepower. 2.0-liter BMW engine will be paired with Toyota-designed, BMW-built motors.
Reportedly the new car will use the same supercapacitor technology that Toyota uses in its Le Mans LMP1 race cars. It allows the car to quickly recharge energy while braking, and then use that energy to provide a performance boost
While Toyota will be responsible for making the new car go, BMW will handle the car's structure and body. Carbon-fiber reinforced plastic, high-strength steel and aluminum will all play major roles in the construction with a low curb weight being a high priority. BMW and Toyota had in January signed an agreement to cooperate on various areas including lithium-air batteries and lightweight technology.
