Nearly all modern sedan's can go fast. The question is can the tires hold up? Are you in control of the car? What about the brakes? Stability? What if something comes in front all of a sudden? There are so many What If's, its almost certain something will happen. If not now, maybe the next time or the next.
I'v had 2 bad experience's. 1) Tire Blowout and 2) Animal confrontation. Will share one of the experiences here since there is a thread related to the latter, and how i managed to save myself and the people with me.
On our way back from GIKI to Peshawar, i was at the wheel of our Nissan Xtrail, my friend was beside me while the driver was sleeping in the back. It was around 9pm and we were near the rashakai interchange when the incident happened.
I had just re-positioned myself by pulling the seat forward and upright cuz i felt tired. This helped and so did the coffee i had just had a while back. Placing both hands on the steering with a tight grip and pulling down the sun visor to reduce the glare from the overhead lamps, i let go of the throttle a bit to ease to 115 <-- was doing 125 before.
BANG, the rear right side tires gives way and all of a sudden the suv is facing the opposite side. 1st instinct, not to hit the brakes and as fast as i could, shifted down to 3rd. During this time, the left rear tire had hit the central divider and given way too with another BANG. Now all i had to do was try to counter the movement of the jeep every time it went the opposite way.
The image below should give you an idea about the horrors i had to face. A twin blowout at such speeds isnt very enjoyable. What amazed me is the control of the SUV and how it just didnt tip over after hitting the divider.
I am a car freak and always check the tires and pressures along with other things one needs to go over before journeying out. The reason here is that the MD of the tires was 2007 making them nearly 6 years old. Managed to save the jeep except for the rear fender and mudflap damage caused due to the steel belt popping out but nothing major. Minor paint chipping was all but had the road not banked to the left, it was certain i would have hit the side guardrail and gone overboard.
So Please drive safe and not like the lunatics I see everyday on the motorway. May Allah keep us all safe.
