Call it politics, bureaucracy, or whatever this is the state of affairs in Pakistan. We are in the middle of an energy crisis and the regulatory authority has yet to approve net metering. This is preventing consumers from selling power produced from solar, wind to the utility. Net metering is already in effect in countries like India and Bangladesh. If net metering is approved in Pakistan, people will have an incentive to adopt alternate energy and reduce their dependance on the utility. However it seems that is not in the interest of some people (IPPs for example). If Nepra wants to increase the tariff, it happens in days, but when it comes to doing something in consumer interest, oh sorry, that's going to take a few years.
Nepra not ready to approve tariff for net metering
LAHORE - The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), responsible for regulating electricity in Pakistan, is not ready to approve Net Metering Tariff despite repeated requests from the Pakistan Engineering Council and Institution of Engineers Pakistan.
The IEP general secretary Mian Sultan Mehmood said that both PEC as well as the IEP have been requesting the NEPRA to approve tariff for Net Metering but there is no progress in this regard in spite of lapse of more than two years.
