I drive a 2009 Corolla 2.0D. Single owner, carefully driven and regularly maintained. 77k on the odometer.
About a year or so ago I started noticing that sometimes, albeit infrequently, I would have trouble engaging the 1st gear upon starting the car up in the mornings. Because it happened infrequently and went away if I simply released and repressed the clutch and put the car in gear I didn't think much about the problem.
More recently, around the 75k mark I also started noticing that gear changes generally are not as smooth as I was used to with this car. There seems to be a very faint scraping on shifting if I listen carefully. The stick also has a little more "play" in it when in neutral than before.
No other symptoms of worn clutch plates or anything like that, i.e. no difficulty in pick or any shudder or vibration.
Could the gear scraping and lack of fluidity in shifting simply be a matter of changing the gear oil? Or symptomatic of something deeper like worn out synchros? I live in Karachi so if the experts think it requires more attention than simply the gear oil then please also recommend a good mechanic/workshop in Karachi that deals with transmission related issues.
