KARACHI: Former president of Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry Iftikhar Ali Malik has urged the government to limit the import of used and reconditioned cars it has allowed under various schemes.
In a statement issued here, he said the government must not allow import of cars, as it would endanger the investment and progress made by the local automobile sector. He said the government should offer incentives to the vendors for manufacturing auto parts locally. It would bring to an end the dependence of local automobile industry on imported auto parts, he said.
Malik said the government should also pay attention to setting up a steel manufacturing unit, which could particularly meet the needs of the automobile industry. “There is no steel-making unit to meet the demand of particular types of steel by the auto industry.”
He said it was the private sector, which brought investment in the automobile sector at a time when no foreign investor was ready to invest here and transfer technology. “Now the govt must facilitate the automobile sector.”
