I drove the TL Type-S and the RDX today as a possible replacement for the Legacy. The Type-S had the automatic trans, they didn't have a manual in stock. The power was pretty good at 286-hp and the linear torque delivery from the NA V6 felt more powerful than the Legacy GT, eventhough there is only an advantage of 6 lb-ft over the Legacy. The steering was very numb compared to the Legacy and overall the car felt like a big boat. The big Brembo brakes were very responsive and the pedal feel was firm, making it better than spongy brakes on the Legacy. But then again I wouldn't expect anything less from Brembo. Overall I don't think that the Type-S is worth $38k, it would be a good deal if it was around $33k.
The RDX was much more interesting to drive than the Type-S, the steering was lively, despite being a small suv. The car didn't feel as fast as the Type-S with its 240hp and 260 lb-ft of torque but again the power delivery was linear. There was no perceptible lag from the variable geometry turbo and the engine felt more like a V6 than an I4. Turbo technology has come a long way, i've driven a few new turbo cars that feel like they are powered by an NA motor. The RDX is also priced around $38k and I think it's probably a better deal than the Type-S.
