Common name for n-hexadecane, C 16 H 34 , a large alkane with good ignition quality, which is used as a diesel fuel. The cetane number of a fuel is a measure of the quality of a diesel fuel; it is defined as being the fraction of cetane in a blend of cetane and a less reactive compound that would have the same ignition quality as the fuel in question. See alkanes, octane.
