KISSIMMEE -- Javaid Butt thought his 12-year-old son was unhurt after a traffic accident Wednesday night. The father and son were stopped at a traffic light when a Toyota Camry driven by a suspected drunken driver hit them from behind.
Butt said he checked on his son, Osman, saw that he appeared to be OK, then got out of the car to speak with the other driver. Osman unbuckled his seat belt and also got out, asking his father what had happened.
Moments later, Osman suddenly collapsed. He was rushed to Osceola Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
"I don't know how it happened," Butt said during an interview at his home Thursday. "It is a puzzling, mysterious case."
Butt, a native of Pakistan who moved his family here six years ago, said he knew of no medical problems that could have contributed to his son's death.
An autopsy was performed Thursday, but the results were not immediately released.
Juan Morales, 44, of Kissimmee was arrested on a charge of resisting an officer without violence after police say he tried to walk away from the accident and refused to cooperate when hospital workers attempted to draw blood. Officer Ralph Herrera, a Kissimmee police spokesman, said alcohol is suspected as a factor in the 10:15 p.m. accident.
"He very forcefully hit me," Butt said, adding that Morales told him he didn't see the red light.
The grieving father said Thursday that he spent every spare minute with his son, who was one of three siblings. They were only a half-mile from their home, returning from buying a loaf of bread, when the accident occurred at East Vine Street and Michigan Avenue.
Osman, a fifth-grader at Mill Creek Elementary School, liked to visit historic sites and amusement parks. He, his father and a friend recently had gone on a trip to Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Butt said his son displayed unusual maturity for his age.
"If anything was incomplete or improper in the house, he tried to do it proper," he said. On Wednesday, the two had worked together on their home's landscaping.
Osman also helped his father remember things he was supposed to do.
"He was very dutiful inside the house," Butt said.
But Osman, the youngest in a family with a 17-year-old daughter and 20-year-old son, also enjoyed such carefree activities as riding bicycles, collecting trading cards and playing video games.
"He was always with me and always helped me," Butt said.
"He was just like my friend, and he was my best friend. I miss him very badly, and I've lost everything."
Morales has a valid drivers license and no criminal history, according to state records.
His blood sample was sent to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement for analysis. He remained in the Osceola County Jail on Thursday on $500 bail.
Osman will be buried today. Carey Hand Cox-Parker Funeral Home, Winter Park, is handling arrangements.
