KARACHI: The Anti-Car Lifting Unit (ACLU) mistakenly killed four persons, who had arrived in Karachi from Quetta to celebrate New Year, on late Tuesday night believing that they were car-lifters and then tried to save their skin by filing a fake encounter report at the police station.
The incident took place on late Tuesday night at Khalid Bin Waleed Road, within the jurisdiction of Ferozabad police station.
According to details, the police party opened indiscriminate fire on a black Toyota Corolla, bearing a fake registration number RUP-009, resulting in the on-the-spot death of Zainuddin and Tahir and critically injuring Ibrahim and Waheedullah. The injured were rushed to the hospital but they succumbed to their injuries.
ACLC sources told Daily Times that all the victims hailed from Chaman and Quetta and had separately returned from business tours in Japan and Dubai.
After returning to their hometown, they planned to celebrate New Year eve in Karachi and purchased a car from the Zarghoon Car Showroom in Quetta to come to Karachi by road.
The sources added that the four were on their way back from Clifton and were headed towards Khalid Bin Waleed Road, where one of them had a showroom. As the victims had purchased the car three days before the incident, they did not have a registration number and were using a fake number plate.
The police party signaled them to stop and when the victims tried to flee, the police party opened indiscriminate fire on them. The police then registered an encounter report at the Ferozabad police station, citing all four victims as bandits.
It is pertinent to mention that a few hours before the incident, a Toyota Corolla belonging to the nephew of senior Sindh minister was snatched within the limits of Boat Basin police station.
The tracker company also showed the car to be heading towards Khalid Bin Waleed Road, resulting in the police party to mistakenly believe that the victims were the car-lifters. Taking serious notice of the incident, Karachi Police Chief Wasim Ahmed has suspended the police party, which was led by Sub-Inspector Malik Irshad and comprised of Head Constable Noor Shah and Constables Zaheer Mirza, Zahoor Khan and Zafar Ali. Ahmed has also constituted an inquiry committee, led by Investigation DIG Ghulam Qadir Thebu, to probe the incident.
