'Prince' Naseem Hamed, the British former boxing world champion, was arrested after a man was injured following a crash involving the fighter's sports car.
The accident took place in the 31-year-old Hamed's home town of Sheffield, northern England. Hamed, together with two other men, was being questioned Monday on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident involving an injury and allegations that they attempted to pervert the course of justice.
Hamed was arrested after his Mercedes car was involved in a collision with a Volkswagen Golf and a Ford Mondeo in Ringinglow Road, Sheffield, earlier Monday.
The Golf driver was trapped in the car and had to be airlifted to the Northern General Hospital, with a suspected broken leg and fractures to both arms. A female passenger in the car also sustained cuts and bruises in the smash.
A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "As a result of a road collision, three men have been arrested and taken into custody.
"A 31-year-old and two 26-year-olds are helping us with our inquiries. They have been arrested on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident involving injury and also on allegations of attempting to pervert the course of justice."
The spokesman added one of the 26-year-old men under arrest had been taken to hospital, after suffering from chest pains.
Hamed, the self-styled 'Prince', was widely regarded as one of British boxing's most exciting fighters.
Born in Sheffield to Yemeni parents, Naseem Salim Ali Hamed made his professional debut in 1992 and remained unbeaten until April 2001, when he lost on a unanimous points decision to Mexico's Marco Antonio Barrera.
