Your idea of putting in a Toyota engine is quite practical. It will be easy to find one, there are plenty of options available. Its easy to work on, mechanical and electrical fitting wont be too much of a problem. It will be reliable and fuel efficient, and in case something goes bad, parts are cheap and easily available.
While the mitsubishi engines mentioned here are good too, they are not feasible for the exact same reasons stated above... not too many to choose from...experts not available. ..fuel guzzlers...and parts are scarce.
Dont be tempted by the evo half cut. As much as it is appealing, it has the apetite of an elephant. You will love the power but can you afford 4km/l average?
If your car is intended for daily use, go the conventional way... there will be modifications required for the Toyota motor but once everything is properly set up, the engine is defimitely going to give you years of reliable pulling.. it might just outlast the chassis.
