Default Motorcycle Diaries, A doc's adventures.

No, dont get the wrong idea, this thread has nothing to do with Che and his travels across South America but yes this thread does feature a doc, his bike and the crazy idea to see the country on a two wheeler. Some people have restless souls and no amount of comfort can bind them to a single place for a long time. I may be included in this category, more than a month at a place and it starts haunting me and the urge to move makes me sick. I cant say I have travelled as much as many of you here but I have covered many a miles in my life. Sometimes purposeless and just for the sake of travel and to keep the sickness away. Very little else makes me as happy as I am when on the road, no matter what mode of transport I take. So when did motorcycle enter in the scenario and why? Ok I stop it here, let us leave the details for my blog. I think these words of Ian Chadwick explain it quite well.

“ If you've never ridden, you can't comprehend. But once you try it, you're hooked for life.

I currently own a Suzuki GS 150, locally manufactured ,small displacement street motorcycle that is cheap, reliable and handles well off the pavement.

Suzuki GS 150, nothing fancy but does the job.

Here, in this space I will share my travel experiences and show you my beloved country as I see it from the back of a motorcycle saddle.

For those of you who are not familiar with me and my strange sense of fun, here are the links of my previous rides I shared on this forum.

I will start with the trip I completed recently.

    Deosai, not to be:

Deosai will always have a special place in my heart, no matter how many times I visit. For me it is like an enchanted land right out of a fairy tale and many of you won’t disagree with me, even the name sounds magical. It is one of the most beautiful places our motherland has been blessed with and it should be on the must visit list of any body heading to the northern part of our country. I had been planning a longer motorcycle trip for some time and the opportunity came when I had to go to Islamabad for ten days training course. First thing I did was to book my motorcycle on the train for Rawalpindi even before making any final plan. I had 4 days extra leave and Kashmir on my mind at the time but things turned out pretty different later. Our training course also included one day visit to Muzaffarabad to see some health program functioning there. This visit changed my mind and I decided to go to Skardu via Deosai instead of a trip to Neelum valley and Azad Kashmir. Although it was very ambitious considering the time of the year, it was the last week of March. No doubt Kashmir is very beautiful and rightly called heaven on earth but the North with its rugged beauty has different attraction for me, so I decided to extend the length of the trip and change direction. I very much wanted to do this trip alone but I had already informed a riding buddy Tahir Saleem( elixer) about the trip and he was looking forward to this trip even more than me, so he accompanied me with his Honda CG 125. I was free from the training course on 25th and we decided to leave on 27th of March, with one day in between for preparation. In the days preceding this trip I was very busy and couldnt prepare well enough, forgetting many things including the compact camera. Dont expect too many and quality photos.

Day 1: Some fun, some rain and mud.

We had planned to leave early in the morning and decided to meet around 6 in the morning. Despite alarm I couldnt wake up on time and Tahir also came a little late and we finally left at 7 am. I wanted to take Marri - Nathiagalli route to Abottabad but Tahir called it time wasting and was against it as we had a very ambitious plan to reach Chillas in a single day. Both of us did it on our last trip while returning but this time we were late and climbing most of the part, so we took Hattar, Taxilla road to Abottabad. I hate this road but had no choice. Reached Abottabad and had breakfast there.

Abbotabad to Mansehra was as usual lot of traffic and very little fun, near Chattar plain loops and bends start and the traffic becomes light. It is always fun and highly recommended to bikers but be careful, a little mistake can cause lot of damage. Had to wait some time for Tahir to catch up and used this time to take some pics.

    Somewhere after Chattar plain.

I waited a while but Tahir didnt show up so decided to continue ride and enjoyed the fine ride in pleasant temperature and bright sunshine. At Batgram clouds covered the sky but did not look threatening. Another pleasant surprise awaited me at Batgram, the road which was under construction during my previous ride and gave me hellish time was ready. It was pure fun to ride that excellent road with few gentle and some sharp curves and beautiful scenery all around.

    Somewhere after Batram.

If u r travelling in the season when all roads and passes are open and if u have a vehicle with good ground clearance then I will suggest that u take Naran-Babusar road and avoid the heat of KKH. Then u can take Astore-Deosai route to Skardu, shorter and much more scenic.

I continued the ride after some rest and few photos. A few kms short of Thakott it started raining and it was just the beginning of what was to come. I had not been able to watch the news and totally missed the predictions of met office about the spring rains, the mistake I had to pay for all along the trip. At Thakot I stopped to buy plastic sheet to cover the luggage and electronic items including camera and mobile phone got wrapped in double layers of plastic bags. So no more photos for the day. After crossing the Thakot bridge one of the worst part of KKH starts, this time at least I didnt have to worry about dust and heat but it didnt make it any easier as both were replaced by cold rain and mud. By late afternoon reached Besham and refueled bike. Then waited for Tahir to catch up as it was decision time, getting late, Chilas nearly 200 kms and the clouds didnt look like giving break any time soon. Tahir refueled his bike and we decided to push on, may be we could make it to Dassu in time. It was not bad and I enjoyed it for a little while riding in light drizzle but closer we got to Dassu and more water the clothing soaked, it got less pleasurable, tackling loaded trucks, only other traffic on the road didnt help either. In the end I was wet, cold, felt pretty miserable and I could only think of hot meal, dry clothes and warm bed. These are the times that differentiate motorcycle traveling from others, strangely its this time of most suffering when you actually feel alive and appreciate the simple comforts which we all take for granted back home. Oh sorry I again forgot its not my blog but a ride report on a forum. Lets not bore you with more words and continue with pics.
