Default Motorcycle Diaries, A doc's adventures.

No, dont get the wrong idea, this thread has nothing to do with Che and his travels across South America but yes this thread does feature a doc, his bike and the crazy idea to see the country on a two wheeler. Some people have restless souls and no amount of comfort can bind them to a single place for a long time. I may be included in this category, more than a month at a place and it starts haunting me and the urge to move makes me sick. I cant say I have travelled as much as many of you here but I have covered many a miles in my life. Sometimes purposeless and just for the sake of travel and to keep the sickness away. Very little else makes me as happy as I am when on the road, no matter what mode of transport I take. So when did motorcycle enter in the scenario and why? Ok I stop it here, let us leave the details for my blog. I think these words of Ian Chadwick explain it quite well.

“ If you've never ridden, you can't comprehend. But once you try it, you're hooked for life.

I currently own a Suzuki GS 150, locally manufactured ,small displacement street motorcycle that is cheap, reliable and handles well off the pavement.

Suzuki GS 150, nothing fancy but does the job.

Here, in this space I will share my travel experiences and show you my beloved country as I see it from the back of a motorcycle saddle.

For those of you who are not familiar with me and my strange sense of fun, here are the links of my previous rides I shared on this forum.

Day6. Flat tires, strong wind, bull dust and trucks.

We left fairly early after having breakfast because we wanted to visit upper Kachura lake on our way back. It was not a long detour and shouldnt have taken lot of time but on the way up we took a wrong turn and ended up in a village with the road further ahead blocked. Backtracking and asking directions wasted some precious time but at last we reached the lake. Didnt stay there for long just took some photographs and we were on our way.

I see from your pictures that the iconic satpara island will be submerged this year when the snow will melt..

    Thank u all.

Leaving the lake, ride continued pretty normally for a while then feeling that luggage needed some adjustment. I stopped. Unloaded and readjusted the luggage on bike, took some photos and waited for my partner to catch up. He appeared after some time, braked beside my bike and asked if I had an air pump. He had a flat front tire which was the result of overtaking a truck on a bad spot. The good thing was that it was not the rear tire other wise we would have had some trouble replacing the tube. We being novices even had our troubles with the front wheel but finally did it and soon were on our way(sorry I dont have any tire changing pics).

This is how I managed luggage. Only essential items.
    Motorcycle Diaries, A doc's adventures. - Chattar?psid1
Green bag on the top is tent, round purple bag in the front is sleeping bag and purple bag at the back is a flat briefcase like soft bag containing clothes and motorcycle spare parts. It is wrapped by extra sheet to protect it from dust and stuff. All the luggage is tied with the help of bungee cord which is easier to manage.

Though it had been in the back of my mind since leaving the lake in the morning but suddenly I realized that I was not feeling well. Physically I was all right but something was bothering me mentally, it could have been the realization that the trip was soon to be over and we were on our way back and probably it was the cause but I kept telling my partner that there is something wrong with the lake. These alpine lakes sometimes have strange effect on you and I feel it all the time, some of you who have visited them might understand what I mean. You are not the same when you leave and the uncomprehending call back remains with u.

I wouldn't suggest a trail tire if large part of your trip is on pavement but no doubt knobs come mighty handy in dirt and mud.

You might find it interesting that in my 37 years of long travel on bikes I have had just one puncture. This includes travelling with damaged tyres with "gattes" in them.
The only puncture happened in Dec 1980 on the only petrol pump in Chillas. Then there were no workshops or hotels on the KKH in Chillas, just 1 petrol pump and a 1 room hotel (restaurant). I was busy having breakfast and dispensing medicines to patients who had missed the bus for Gilgit When I started the bike it was puncture. I was driving a 1977 Honda CD175 twin and the locals repaired the tyre gladly and I was on road to Gilgit.

dear have been ever to kkh .. i don't think every 40km there is a puncture shop .. even in remote areas there are puncture shops but they don't know the exact work nor they have machine to open the tire for tubeless rides .. once when i had a puncture they ruine my tire and alloy rim with hammering it because they usually only fix punctures of trucks which they are use to .. better you learn about how to fix a puncture . i have heard about ta fluid of USA which you put from the air nosel into the tire and then flow air and take a round now the fluid rolled all over the inside tire .. this helps to not puncher the tire .. there are also desi fluids for the same purpose .
