Default Solo Flight North Pakistan 2011 - Biking, Hiking, Hitchhiking, Jeep Safari & NATCO

Alhamdullillah, I have completed my North Trip alone. 16.07.2011 to 30.07.2011 alone. Joined 4 groups in way. Enjoyed a lot. Earned friends and memories.

I have travalled from Multan to Mansehra in Shalimar AC Coach with bike loaded on top.

From Mansehra I have started my biking trip to Naran and Jalkhad, Chilas, Gilgit. Then visited Hunza Duikar (Eagle Nest), Karimabad and Ataabad Lake.

On return from Hunza I have visited Naltar lake on bike alone.

After return to Gilgit from Naltar, I parked my bike in Jamal Hotel and set off via NATCO to Skardu. From Skardu visited Sadpara Deosai, Chillam and Astore.

From Astore I went Raikot, visited fairy meadow and returned back to Gilgit. From Gilgit visited Yaseen Valley. From Yaseen returned back to Gilgit. and there on Public Transport Coaster returned to Rawalpindi.

From Rawalpindi I have visited Nathia Gali and back to Pindi. From Pindi via Skyways started Journey to Home (Multan)

    Thanks

    Jalkhad

    1. Don't you think going to Naran, Hunza, FM, Deosai and Skurdu in one go is too much dragging oneself and ultimately feeling fed up at the end? May be it is just me as I prefer to attack one area and then spend sometime at one spot where I feel the best... e.g on my trip to Khunjerab pass, I spent three days in Karimabad just feeling lazy and going up and down. Similarly if I go to FM, I will be in FM!

    2. I am surprised that you just spent 300-500/day on hotels; what is the trick here? Please share hotel information all along your trip including the quality of rooms and location. This will be really helpful. Thanks
    @wanderlust

    Thanks for your interest.

Sir jee, you are right... But as I am concerned, as soon I reached a place, It just gets old for me. Achieved, so go another. I am a greedy tourist. Instead a lazy rest, I started for another destination. These are two styles of tourism. Lazy and fast.

2ndly aisi jaghoon pa bar bar nahi jaya jata I mean Northern Areas, so I tried to cover maximum areas.

I didnt felt tired even at the end, but landslides/rains were a big concern as leaves were getting end.

I spend much time, I stopped more than 20 places just between Mansehra and Naran for sight seeing and breathing and enjoying and meeting local people. I met local people, drink local water as what locals were drinking.

So I don't think, it was a very fast track...

Two main viewpoints are at Thol and other is Ghulmit (Nagar). Rakaposhi tou pooray rastay say hi nazar aati ha...

Ghulmit Nagar - Accomodation ka ziada pata nahi... Wahan par likha tha kay, k camping and hotel rooms available. But there was good meals (restaurant)

Thol viewpoint ka hotel bohat chota ha...

    How to reach:
From Gilgit take any transport going to Hunza and Ghulmit Nagar Viewpiont utar jaen. Usually all transport make a mid-way stop at one of these viewpoints.

There are also a trek going to BC or glacier...

At viewpoint, you should be lucky enough for getting clear weather...

A life-time view you will see there. Rakaposhi and its glacier just at your head. and you may have a neck pain for seeing the top

Naltar Bala to Lake is somewhat 12Km.

There are 4 lakes just near the main lake of naltar.

One is high naltar lake. (one hour trekking is required).

It took me 3.5 hours from Nomal to Naltar Lake... Road is very much inclined.

Solo Flight North Pakistan 2011 - Biking, Hiking, Hitchhiking, Jeep Safari & NATCO - 280427

The road climbs 4500 feet in just 15 Km. Nomal to Naltar Bala.

Naltar Bala to naltar lake is not much inclined road... but the way is very stony.. water crossings...

At one point the road gets into the river... amazing scenery.

    I hope it will help

Before going forward from here, I would like to share my experiences day by day.

    Day-1

I got leave from my office on 3.15pm. I rushed back to home, took lunch and get my rucksack and bike and set off for General Bus Stand. My seat was reserved on telephone on Shalimar Bus Service. Only One Bus go, Multan to Mansehra..

My brother came with me on Bus Stand for helping me. The Pallay dar (Bike loader) kept the bike on his shoulders and load the bike on the top.

I have two options for getting to Mansehra.. One is Ali Express (Multan to Lahore and from Lahore Abdullah Travels to Mansehra. These two bus services have facility to load bike in the diggi of the Bus. But I felt its not easy to load/unload load unload in this way.

Whereas Shalimar was direct but bike was to be load on the top. I opted for Shalimar.

By travelling in the night Multan to Mansehra, I saved one day.

In the bus, there was a group of two on one CD-70 plying to Mansehra for onward upto Naran. When I met them in way, they also said to accompany me upto Hunza as they get highly motivated by hearing my high aims.

The background of going alone, I have already told you. that my initial plan was with a friend, but he set off earlier out of plan. Meanwhile I have missed all other options. Other options were with PBC https://www.pakwheels.com/forums/roa...ighest-plateau

Another option was Ultimate Adventure Club tour worth 13K and 8 days. They were covering, Astore Deosai, Hunza, Naltar, Shandur Mela, Chitral Kailash, Lowari, Dir, Pindi.

So at that nick of time, I lost all options so I was alone. Then I have two options that going on bike. My initial aims were of Deosai and Babusar. And for Babusar bike is necessary otherwise high jeep charges. Also I have prepared my beloved bike for this journey. And it was in superb conditions engine, tyre tube, chain gears (garari) etc. So I opted for going on bike.

I did my dinner at Sargodha near Salam Chowk. Bus plied via Jhang, Sargodha, Salam Chowk, Motorway and Hassanabdal, Haripur, Abbotabad and Mansehra.

I tried to sleep in the way and got succeeded to get a few and so that get a morning without tiredness.

    Day-2 - Mansehra to Jalkhad

The day-2 started with high aims, it was first day of my own driving/biking. My plan was to reach upto Jalkhad on the same day. I reached Mansehra somewhat 7am.

Then the bike downloading was carried out. Got a group photo with the Bus driver. A nice fellow (Malang) with long hairs (Zulfain) from Mirpur (AJK).

After that I with the two person group, did breakfast and get the bike tank fuel and purchased mobil oil.

Start my journey. From Mansehra to Balakot at 8am. Mansehra was looking so much lush green and beautiful with high lush green hills all around. Locals told that there are several walking trails in the vicinity of Mansehra. There was a leaned rock, which can be seen from Mansehra.

Journey to Balakot was superb. High hills in the far all around seems to be more high and beautiful than Galyat.

At Balakot, I changed the oil. From Balakot, started to hike along the Kunhar River.

I stopped at Kewai, Paras, Malakandi, Manhandri, Khanian, Khanian, Kaghan. Enjoyed the serene beauty of the Valley, compared it with Neelum. It was my first visit to Kaghan Valley. Last year I have to returned from Malakandi due landslide.

Clouds were gathering, but I managed to reach Naran at 3pm when it started raining. I sat in the kokha, and did Lunch there and a tea.

From Kewai onward, I hanvn't any contact with the two member group from Multan.

I met a lot of bikers, which waved victory sign and thumb to me.

At 5, the group called me. I met them, they got a camp for Rs. 300/- for three person. They offered me to join them. They were tired and they have cancelled the decision to go Hunza with me. Actually with two person, CD70 didn't worked well.

I waved them gudbye and set off for Jalkhad. Enjoyed the beauty ahead Naran and reached Jalkhad at 7.15pm in evening. The access road of bridges at Burawai, Battakundi was not in good shape. Otherwise the road was excellent. The scenery was out of world. Especially the snow bound peaks peeping the valley.

At Jalkhad, when I was talking with Bismillah Hotel Owner, I saw a group from Lahore 5 person on a Honda Civic. They offered me to share the room. I told the hotel wala that I am joining them, He said its ok.

So I joined the group. They ordered Chicked Karahi and Daal. Chicken Karahi had very much Garam Masala.

After that I laid my sleeping bag in the wooden room and slept. I was worried about my bike which was in the open air, but the hotel wala assured for its security.

    Thanks.

    Day-3

Day-3 started with high aims for Babusar. Set off at 8am from Jalkhad after a breakfast. I was ahead the car of the group, I joined. When I crossed a water crossing and reached Behsal. I wait for them, but they don't appear after some wait. Then I started ahead and reached Lulusar lake.

From Lulusar, I reached Gitidas and started the climb of the Babusar and reached at top at 10am.

At one water crossing, Bike got stucked in round stones, and local boys helped me.

At top, i wait for the group, but they didnt. I thought might they returned back.

From top, I started to descend, at descend, i seen kohistani boys sitting free on the roadside. Thier cattle were grazing somewhere uphill and they resting on the road.

This portion of road is wide almost 50feet. Here some boys tries to stop me, but I accelerated the bike and escaped the scene. Journey got continued upto Babusar Village (a very beautiful village). Tree cutting was on going.

Then there was some portion of paved road with some kacha portion just near some bridge or water crossing.

Finally I reached a spot, where I can see the KKH and due to landslide I have to take a long-cut and have to go towards Chilas City.

At this portion, A person stopped me, He was on bike and asked me to help him starting his bike, I said him to do kick, He was kick-starting while holding his clutch, I said to him that my group is coming, and they are mechanics and will help you. It was some deception by the person, He was saying that he don't know bike driving and can't start his bike, but he was standing at a patch where there was no population at 10km distance. I escaped the scene without getting down from my bike.

Then I reached Chilas at 2pm. Chilas city has some cool water Quls (Chasma) flowing. I had dinner at Chilas KKH. Then at 2.30 departed from Chilas and reached Raikot at 4pm. Here in this way I met the group from Lahore again.

Then the journey continued, I reached Jaglot at 7pm. Target of the day was Gilgit. So the journey continued and reached Gilgit at 10pm.

Stay at Jamal Hotel Gilgit. Restaurants were closed. Ate some bakery pizza etc.

    End of the day.

    Day-4 Gilgit to Hunza

The journey again started at 10am to Hunza via Nomal. Nomal was a quite calm village. After have a cold drink set off and cross Nomal Bridge and met some 10km of newly metaled road of KKH.

After that travelled in Nagar under the shadow of Rakaposhi. Enjoyed the views enroute. Then entered the Hunza. A lot of village of Hunza like Nasirabad, Rahimabad etc.

Bought Khoobani. Local boys gifted me fresh apple.

From Aliabad did change the engine oil. Reached Karimabad at 5pm. Lunch at Rakaposhi View piont Ghulmit Nagar 2.

From Karimabad decided to stay at Eagles Nest. The ascend was very steep. At one point, a fellow has helped in pushing the bike as I have to stop. So again restarting to get pace was difficult due to angle.

Visited Eagle's Nest Viewpoint. Stayed there at night. Karahi gosht with Aalo Bhaji.

    Drank Hunza Water.

I think you should stay at naran on day 1st, as you have already on the move from multan. Then 2nd stay at chilas because driving a bike on those type of roads is quite hectic. A long rest between two biking day is a must, then you move towards gilgit or you can go to fairy meadows.

I also think that you had drived first 5 days so continuously that in the end dropping the bike in the hotel and go on jeep.
