    Default Explore Azad Kashmir Plan

I am planning an “Explore Azad Kashmir” tour this July. Azad Kashmir is small but beautiful and due to its proximity to the border rarely visited. Due to lack of tourism it is relatively free of the nuisances of tourist culture and lacks information.
    fficeffice" />
Plan to use my 2 stroke Kawasaki KE175 for the trip. It is 1982 model but completely refurbished and reliable (hopefully).
Outline of the plan should be somewhat like this,
    • Lahore-Gujrat-Bhimbar-Baghsar.
    • Baghsar-Chakswari-Kotli-Banjosa-Toli Pir.
    • Toli Pir-Bagh-Sudhan gali-Hatian-Rashian-Lepa.
    • Lepa-Athmuqam-Shardi. Shardi-Kel-Taobut.
    • Taobut-Kamri-Minimarg.
    • Minimarg-Burzil-Chilam.
    • Chilam to Rattu.
    • Rattu-Shounter-Chitta Katha.
    • Chitta Katha- Kel.
    • Kel- Shardi-Jalkhad-Naran.
    • Naran-Lahore.

Step 6-7-8-9 would be on foot/pony or public transport.
2 extra days to be decided on the spot.

    My questions
    • Is there a direct route between Lepa and Neelum valley? Otherwise I’ll have to drive 100kms extra through Muzaffarabad.
    • Places we need to get permission from the military.
    • Places needing permission from the local authorities.
    • Availability of fuel (Kawa is heavy on fuel).
    • Availability of rest houses/food/dhabas.
    • Availability and charges for porters and ponies (step 6-9).
    • Availability of electricity for charging.
    • Working of cell phones.

Any input/help/ guidance or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Dr Omar Khan

    Thanks Asif for the info.
According to my preliminary information Baghsar and Leepa also need permission from the military.

I travelled to leepa valley last week end on bike.. We had to take an NOC from DC of balla hatian. After than we were allowed to enter into Leepa Valley. There are many check posts and they make your entry in the register.

If you want to be on local transport than from muzafrabad.. than you have to take buss.. it will take you to reshian.. And will charge 170 Rs.. Than you have 2 options either hire the jeep they will charge from 2000-2500 Rs upto leepa valley. Or for a single person they take 250 Rs...

If you go there from jeep ask them to take you from mojian .. that side has many places to see.

There is no electricity problem in Leepa... I stayed at chinar hotel rest house...In Leepa there is a place name bara hazari.. Its a mountain top 12000 ft altitude. Nice place to visit.. But its route will be open after 15th-20th June. There is also place name tareet shareef, few tombs of Peer are there, from there you can see LOC and indian checkposts as well.

Thanks for a very useful reply Imran.
Yes I will be making a loop around Leepa. Unfortunately there is no track for 4x4 to Neelum which could have saved a long drive so return from Lepa would be different from arrival.
Just your advice; would I be better off approaching the military or the civil authorities, or maybe both.

    Regards
    Omar

@Jamshed, Currently I am the only one committed to this trip. However we might be 2 or 3 as it needs permissions for sensitive areas.

Interestingly I have never heard of Baghsar from anyone. The last time I visited it was a very long time back and still have fantastic memories about it.

Anyone familiar with Baghsar and its latest situation?

    Cheers
    Omar

Luckily I met Mobeen (aesiege) and the group of his wonderful friends on the Reshian Top. We had a cup of tea together and had a bit of gup shup.

AOA Shahid, Noori Pass is open but like all other routes in these mountains you can never be certain due to landslides. Mobeen (aesiege) was telling me that when they reached Noori Pass it closed due to landslides and they had to take the Balakot-Muzaffarabad route instead. It opened next day.
I would suggest you to keep in touch with some local drivers or guides and be prepared for slight change of plans whenever needed.
    Have a nice trip
