    Default Old Silk Route

Many people jumble up KKH and Silk Route. Silk route was an ancient route used by merchants that existed in Multiple countries and even Multiple Continents. A part of this route was in Pakistan too, called "Kinu Kutto". It was widened for a single jeep travelling in 60's and at a time only one Jeep could travel, for crossing, one had to get off the road, just like Train Crosses. Where as KKH was built by Pak-China in 70's.

Since Silk route is no more in use after construction of KKH, this route is abandoned. A part of this "Old Silk Route" is preserved for history references for people in our and after ages

Islamabad to Khanjerab31st July to 6th August -1471145

In the picture above, you can see the Silk Road as a line in the middle of mountains. Its on the other side of Indus river, while standing on KKH.

I used bikes side mirror more for scenery behind rather than to see traffic
It was great idea when there is virtually no traffic at all on KKH.

    Man and Nature.
You really wonder the efforts to cut these mountains and pave this KKH.
    Isn't wonderful ?

Greenery once again vanishes and barren mountains around. KKH is really versatile in scenery.

There are 2 tunnels ahead. Hope you can spot them.

So here is tunnel. You will spot many of these on KKH. And you will notice that these tunnels are not inside the mountain, rather they are on the side of mountain.
Mystery is that these areas where you find such tunnels are highly exposed to landslides and thus interrupt not only traffic but also destroy road beneath.
These tunnels are designed to avoid this. Land sliding simply slides above the roof of these tunnels and traffic and road remain safe.

Islamabad to Khanjerab31st July to 6th August -1471927

In some parts we even found wire fences to protect traffic from land sliding stones.

Reached back Gilgit somewhere around 5pm. Some bikes needed fixes and we all needed lunch. I was not feeling well because of flu and so was Azfar because of accident.
After lunch and fixes with bikes we checked in a hotel. I and Azfar went to sleep, while others went out for re-filing tanks.

I think you can access it IF you cross the river from any of many bridges there on Indus river.

It is between Gilgit and Hinza. Don't remember exactly how much Kms from Gilgit or Hunza. But if you travel there, you will find Information boards on both sides of road.

    Default Day-6

Next day we all woke up early. Left hotel without breakfast. Today's plan was to reach back as closer to home as possible.
All other members had re-fueling last night, only me and Azfar were left. Reached gas station and there was no one to fill that time. We were lucky, since all other members stayed in lines last night for petrol. I again asked all, that if any one has some space in tank, fill it now, its the best moment.

It was about to Dawn in Gilgit.

We had breakfast some 25-30 Km from Gilgit. I don't have pics of that place, but I believe Shakeel or Azfar do have.
I was reluctant to take medicine while driving, but then I decided to take it and be extremely careful while driving. I had decided that whenever even I had an illusion of sleeping, I will stop and will make myself fresh again before driving.
After breakfast we continued. Our first stopover was at Mountain Ranges Junction Point.

At this point 3 mountain ranges (Karakoram, Himaylia and HindKush) meet. Further here, Gilgit river joins Indus river coming from Skardu side.

It was a nice sunny and bright day there.
