    Default Biking to Khunjerab Info

    AOA guys
I need info regarding trip to Khunjerab.

    - How's the security condition on KKH these days? (say for a small group of 3 bikes)
Hearing some bad stories recently on that road (especially between Chillas to Gilgat).

    - Is it advisable to do the trip in June, or is it too early for Khunjerab?
Also what about covering Skardu side too via Astore/Deosai route, and then to Gilgat via Gilgat-Skardu road.

    - What's the Babusar Top opening date?

    Hello Dear,

I have not heard any news now a days. If you have link so please share so we could update ourself. I just googled to check if there anything happened but found nothing in fact found some incidents happened in 2013 and 2014 which I was not aware of before and I was there in end of August 2014 and also stay a night in Chillas and came through Babusar towards Naran but could not feel any security issue.

I am sure you will not find any difficulty in June to reach Khunjerab. More you can by calling on below numbers:
    Hotel Riveria, Sost
    Asif Kareem (Reception Boy)
    Mobile: 03455789618
    Main bazar, Sost, Gojal Hunza
    Phone: 05813

In June till Chillum you will find clear road and in Deosai you may find muddy track due to melting snow. But you can confirm about route from Astore or Chillum. If you crossed Deosai, you will not find any problem to reach Skardu and Gilgit-Skardu road is a narrow road and due to rain some parts are land sliding areas and no one knows when road goes block due to large stones.

Babusar should be open in June i guess.

I would recommend you to plan your tour in late June or mid July to get access to all areas.

    Regards,

No link bro, a friend told me that PIMS arranged a tour to Gilgit and at Chilas, they waited till they had around 20 vehicles arrived. Then Police escorted them from Chilas to Gilgit.

But i just contacted a friend in Abbotabad and he told that it's all fine and trucks have started to come from that side and he even met few drivers.

How about Cell Service coverage in these areas??
I guess about Petrol, Just fill your tank wherever you see a petrol pump.

I have not remember exactly about mobile services as i just used cellphone in populated areas and even did not touch my mobile in remote areas, amazing, No?. But you must have a Zong sim as there are some areas where just Zong works like Sost area.

As for petrol, Yes, recommended is to get your tank full but when you are going to Astor, Must refill tank from any pump on KKH and if coming to Deosai from Skardu, must refill from Skardu. When you travel to Khunjerab, must refill tank before crossing Attabad lake. There is a pump at Sost but shortage of petrol is common there.

Thanks. I was asking about populated areas too.

Refill on KKH before turning to Astore---Check

    Refill before Attabad Lake-----Check

After going through some threads, Babusar Pass and Deosai seems offlimit even to the end of June.

on the way to Shigar you will see desert around the road but to read the dunes you will have to walk off the road on sand a bit. I have visited Sadpara lake, Shigar Fort and Shangrila (worth visiting). Upper Kachura lake is also worth visiting which is a few kilometer after Shangrila. Some of people told me about Khaplu, Manthokha water fall also must visit area. In short, each road around Skardu worth visiting till end if one has got plenty of time. :-)

got it. most probably i'll be covering all the points.
kindly share some idea about hotel costs at main points.
Nothing too fancy. Just a student level thikana for night will do.

I would recommend you for Camping because it can save a lot of your money If you have experience in it and also these are all safe areas. Otherwise, my staying experience is in Skardu and because i was with my wife so "Student Level" say kaam nhi chalna tha. In Skardu you can find low price hotels also. Shigar desert, Shigar fort & Shangrila can be visited in one day but if you head to touch end of that road then you might need to stay in any hotel on the way. I dont remember exactly but Skardu hotel room costs us around 3000 for 2 nights (it was not a luxurious room but just a double bed, attached bath and TV included room. Student level pay to zameen pay mattress bhi chal jatay hain.... :-)

well that seems reasonable then. i was worried i might not be able to find room below 5000/night at some places.

I just returned from a Bike Tour from Karachi to Swat, to Gilgit to Khunjerab and back to Karachi about a week and a half back.

And I can assure you its very very safe.

Chilas to Gilgit is not a bad ride, plus you will constantly pass FC Officers in black shalwar kameez patroling the KK on foot. Plus plenty of army jawan at most bridges as well police mobiles passing you from time to time.

I got a full tank of fuel in Chilas which was more than enough till Gilgit. The only stops you will have is for photography and drinking water.

Its a safe track these these days with all the security in that region.

Bro i am currently in Gilgit. Back after visiting Khunjerab.
Get a tank full from Gilgit, and then from Ali Abad.
After Ali Abad, petrol availability is not sure so calculate your need accordingly.
In my case a tank full was enough from Ali Abad to Khunjerab and back to Ali Abad with plenty of fuel left.

Road condition is better than Motorway.
