Pakistan is keen to explore the possibilities of Korean technical assistance in the field of transport research, highway safety and particularly the Korean technology developed as Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to maximise the operating efficiency of existing roadway facilities.
These views were expressed by Minister of State for Communications Shahid Jamil Qureshi in an exclusive meeting with his Korean counterpart Mr. Choo Byung-Jik, Minister of Construction and Transportation during his visit to Korea to attend ministerial conference.
The minister further expressed that government of Pakistan has committed an investment to the tune of US$ 1.0 billion to widen, rehabilitate and strengthen the designated Asian Highway Routes falling in the territory of Pakistan in conformity with the classification and international design standards set forth for the Asian Highways over the next three years.
He apprised his counterpart about the initiative taken and concerted efforts being made by the government under the dynamic leadership of General Pervez Musharraf, President Islamic Republic of Pakistan to develop robust mechanism for financing the development of highly capital intensive transport infrastructure and the requisite facilitation measures for gearing up the integration process for the benefit of all the members states.
The Korean Minister of Construction and Transportation assured all possible help and assistance to the Government of Pakistan in the field of transport research and infrastructure development.
