KARACHI: The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) has suggested that a competent authority be established for the control of air pollution in the city. It also suggested the excise department make fitness certificates mandatory for all commercial and private vehicles.
CDGK Environment Committee Chairman Muhammad Sidiqui, DO Environment and EDO Agriculture visited Suparco and also called on DG Air Commodore Arshad Friday.
Later, Dr Badruddin Ghori delivered a comprehensive briefing about the findings of Suparco’s research on the topic. He asked the delegation to make arrangements for a City Environmental Control Authority to be chaired by the city nazim.
He suggested that the city government should work with the excise department and make fitness certificates mandatory for all private and commercial vehicles. Suparco had completed environmental studies in different cities. It is also assisting the CDGK Transport and Communication Department in its awareness campaign about air pollution caused by smoke-emitting vehicles.
The study had identified Saddar as one of the most affected areas by air pollution. The delegation also inspected the Suparco mobile analytical laboratory and other departments.
