KARACHI: The wreckage of vehicles burnt on May 12 is being removed from their sites by the armed men that were responsible for May 12 so that FIRs can be avoided, claimed Karachi Goods Carrier’s Association (KGCA) President Muhammad Khalid Khan.
Five days after May 12 a lot of the wreckage is still lying on the streets. During May 12, many people were deprived of their vehicles because miscreants set them on fire. The majority of these vehicles where six-wheel trucks, trailers, and other types of good-carriers. The vehicles were forcibly taken by the police for the purpose of blocking the roads on May 12. These vehicles were also the set-on-fire targets of the violence that emerged that day.
“Initial reports we’ve received reveals that 18 heavy vehicles registered with our association were set on fire. These vehicles are worth 30.5 million rupees,” said Khan.
While talking to Daily Times, he said that “during May 12 and May 13 midnight, heavy confinements of Sindh police, led by DSP Keamari Town Akram Abro, raided garages on Hawkes Bay Road and took away more then 50 of these vehicles by force.”
Besides that, some unidentified armed men also took away some vehicles registered to the KGCA from different parts of the city. “They took these vehicles to block roads and then these armed men set them on fire while the police stood and watched,” said Khan.
Khan said that his agency is contacting other transportation unions in the country. “This was all preplanned and we want to find the real cause of this. If the owners are not compensated then we will launch a country-wide campaign against the authorities,” Khan warned.
