    Default Engine Swap in Nissan Sunny 1991 (B13)

    AoA,

    Thread update: Swapped the engine with EFI one after wasting double the money on overhaul. Details of swap from page-2

    Guys I recently got a Nissan Sunny 1991. Currently it has a carby 1300cc engine, which frequently gives bluish white smoke, particularly, during start ups. Its very generous in eating up the engine oil.

    Many have suggested to go for 16 valve twin cam EFI engine. One guy told me that he visited Ahata Mithu a few months ago and got 12 valve engine swapped for 17k, while 16 valve engine was available for around 24K.

    Would appreciate if someone can guide me about best engine (I prefer EFI), the prices, the best place to get engine and best workshops to get the Nissan swaps done.

    Thanks

    @spectra, @SER_GTR, @star2

    I've checked the knock sensor, crank shaft, cam shaft and MAF outputs at ECM side (in accordance with recommended values in the manual).

    MAF is giving 0.8V on ECM side when at idle, it is supposed to be in between 1-1.4V.

    Camshaft output is also not in accordance with desired range. Knock and crank seem fine.

    Saqib Bhai, though crank and cam are same, the manual says we should check AC voltage for crank and DC voltage for cam. Is it really so or there's something wrong in the manual???

    Secondly, at the MAF pins, the output is fine. But at the ECM side, there's some drop.

    As per the manual, if abnormally low voltage is detected at ECM from MAF, it will enter the failsafe mode. RPM will not go beyond 2500 (which indeed seems the case here).

    And also from other internet sources, if Cam sensor is bad, fail safe mode will be activated, with ignition timing value set to whatever last value was received (which in my case is set to extremely retarded value).

    i am not a bijli expert but if i was you will get MAF and Cam sensor and put them in tos ee if wiring is at fault or sensors themselves. Seems like wiring power source issue though.

    Check for bad ground. Verify the VCC and GND should be 5 V. Some voltage drop is just ok but it should not be i guess more than .5 volts

    Check for a bad wiring job from a pathan (that you were very happy with till a week back)
    success is the ability to go from one failure to the next without any loss of enthusiasm

    @ isbcap

    MAF can wear out and send a weak signal back to ECU, but if you are seeing loss of voltage at MAF then trace out the loss.

    For testing pulse sensors, if the sensor is 2 wire permanent magnet type, it will generate an AC voltage signal which would be quite noisy, If its a 3 wire hall effect sensor it will generate a DC pulse of 5V and the frequency of the pulse is read as position.

    To understand it - even if you slowly rotate the engine the hall effect one will read 5V once the tone wheel triggers it, in a permanent magnet sensor (2 wire) the voltage only rises on speed of the tone wheel, the tone wheel is also broken in places to determine a special event like TDC1

    Well.... I still believe that the wiring was reasonable, being mostly uncut.

    The trouble happened when I started the car by pressing full throttle.

    Now I've been reading the manual, any bad event can lead the ECU to put the system in fail safe mode, and resetting the ECU memory should be the first step to see if some persistent fault is there. I only discovered this yesterday, and with no cel connected (and none exists in dash), I'm now devising my own ways to get the fault codes and reset the ECU (based on obd-II connection diagram).

    Once a code is persistent after the reset, only then I proceed for further process.

    Regarding wiring, whatever sensors I've checked on supposed pin numbers, those are giving fine outputs. The shortcomings, as of now, are fuel pump relay, cel, auto fan.
    @Xulfiqar,

    I'm still unable to trace those two bloody sensor (camshaft - crankshaft) . Got under the vehicle after quite some effort. But working under it isn't easy for someone not used to it...

    for a check light - buy an wide angle LED and print a sticker that says CHECK - stick it somewhere in the dashboard (like an empty button socket) and paste the sticker there (military style)

    No DLC procured yet. Pinout, I've compiled myself (most part of it. a few pins remaining).

    Lost interest in it during past 2-3 days. 1st thing on agenda is wire up the DLC (after getting one, lol)

    I'm even unable to get agilator connectors to connect at the end of my multimeter leads. Isb market is $hit.

    Starting DIYs is so hard when you are unable to get the smallest of the parts. And particularly when you ask them for a part and they just say, "what???". And then refer you to other shopkeeper, who refers you to 3rd one, who refers to 4th one and the last one in the chain refers you to the 1st one

    Why do you need alligators at end of multimeter? you would have to do that your self. Buy a DVM lead of Rupees 50 and solder two alligator clips. In order to check connectors of ECU the most handy thing is T shaped pin so that you do not have to pry out the wires.
