PTCL is the only land line operator here...............and all the DSL operators are using PTCL's exchange............but suppose a new operator jumps in the Land line business............then what will these DSL operators do........?? I mean, then they have to use other Companies exchange as well which will cost them alot..!! Rite??
Here in Pakistan, strangely there is ONLY one Land line operator............but in other countries there are many, just like Cellular operators........why is that so?? Dont u think we need another land line operator??
just take India.......Airtel, BSNL, MTNL all are in the land line business...!!!
OK.. Here is my reply.. Sorry for being late, but you know the episode with electricity in karachi plus I got little time to sit on pc.
It is a bit confusing that what would happen if more than one fixed line operators have their infrastructure in place, whom would the dsl operator choose and why. The answer to this question is simple, There is only one large operator with massive infrastructure in place in both india and UK. In india its BSNL and in UK its BT. Thanks to a move called Local Loop Unbundling, other fixed line and interner service providers use BSNL and BT's local loop infrastructure, to provide their service. That is , the link from your house to your local exchange is owned by the these companies , which are in our cases (BSNL in India, BT in UK and PTCL in Pakistan), while other fixed line operator just switch your line from exchange to their own equipment (DSLAMs) or switching centre. They pay agreed fee on every connection that is switch to thier equipment and since they do it on large scale, they can provide you with a cheaper alternative for both dsl and land line solution. BT in UK, itself provide you with a complete Fixed line and DSL solution with their own equipment which you can brand yourself and sell. ( BT WHOLESALE).
Airtel provide DSL connection so I highly doubt that they have their own infrastructure, they might be using BSNL or MTNL's local loop.
damn it.....................it confused me more!!!!!!
they provide Voice over existing BT lines............what's the point????
its like u subscribe to a landline operator on ur existing PTCL line??
btw i found this.............take a look
but one user is saying that all companies use BT Exchange...........but another is saying that Sky and Talk Talk can provide dedicated line.....!!!

I hope that you are not as confused as you were when you wrote the reply above now that i have explained to you that they do use BT's local loop. Companies like Sky and Talk Talk have their own switching centre ( core network) which is connected to BT and each other. Thats why it is said that they are able to provide a new line. Even if you check the site of Talk Talk forum, you will see that they use BT Outreach to solve some of their problems, mainly on the local loop circuit.(BT Outreach is BT's division which look after the access of other operators to BT network and its maintenance.). Sky has recently announced that it will move its customers from its own network to BT Wholesale.
For DSL only provider, all of them ofcourse have to make use of BT's network.
The result of having more than one fixed line operator is competition and this leads to lower call rates and line rent.
hmm.......ok lets start
first abt the MVNO's.........well i already had some idea abt them....they dont have their own network.....they use others network........like Virgin Mobile uses T-Mobile's network........BT Mobile uses Vodafone and Tesco uses O2's......!!!!!! so are they given different codes or not??
now abt Virgin Media.......well its a Cable Network.......no need of BT lines.........cuz its cable based (Voice/Video/Data)........in many forums i've seen people recommending Virgin Media to users who dont have BT Lines at their place......!!!
dont get anything abt Kingston Communications other than that they provide ADSL service under the brand name of Eclipse Internet...!!!!
so basically the question remain the same, that i've asked on the last page (including another one highlighted in Bold)...!!
Well they may or may not have their own numbers, depends on the setup. If the have, they maintain thier own HLR and and have their own sims. If they have not, they just use host's equipment and brand host sims as their own and cell. Even if they have you wont be able to tell because number portability is so common in UK, that you cant find out a network by just looking at the mobile number.
Yes Virgin media is cable. They provide fixed line internet and TV on that.
And lastly,
Kingston Communication is to BT what MTNL is to BSNL.
The thing is that BT doesnt have a network in Humbershire area of UK ( Kingston upon Hull). There, local loop and fixed services are operated by Kingston Communication.
Same with BSNL. BSNL doest have its footprint in Dehli and Mumbai. There, these services are operated by MTNL.
Hope these answer your queries. Ask me if you have more question or you think that I have said anything which is wrong.
