LAHORE: The Punjab government will import sophisticated weapons for the personal security of District Management Group (DMG) and Police Service of Pakistan (PSP) officers posted in the province. The imported pistols will also be provided to federal government officers working in the province on key administrative slots.
More than 700 officers of federal cadres including 380 DMG, 225 PSP and 80 of others are presently working in police and administrative departments of the province. The government would import Glock-17, an Austrian made pistol worth between Rs.60,000 to Rs.70,000 each. This has created resentment among officers of other cadres. The government will request federal government for the issuance of No Objection Certificate (NOC) for the purchase and import of this non-prohibited bore sophisticated weapons branded as Glock-17, an official said Friday. The secret agencies reported in the wake of current terrorism the suicide bombers and target killers could target officers of both the cadres as they have to maintained law and order in the province. The officers would carry this pistol along with them while attending offices and traveling within the country.
According to data, there are more than 600 All Pakistan Unified Group (APUG) officers dealing in the administrative and law and order affairs of the province from BS-17 to BS-22. Among these 380 are DMG officers (civil bureaucrats) including 72 of BS-17, 100 of BS-18, 113 of BS-19, 77 of BS-20, 12 of BS-21 and 6 of BS-22. Whereas the total number of PSP is 225 including 70 of BS-17, 75 of BS-18, 36 of BS-19, 32 of BS-20, 9 of BS-21 and one the Inspector General of Police in BS-22 running the police department and responsible of law and order, crime and writ of law in the province.
In addition, about 80 officers belong to various other federal services including Office Management Group (OMG), Postal, Audit and Accounts (A&A), Banks, Education, Railways, Information, Income Tax, Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, Ministry of Defence, Army, Custom and Excise, Commerce and Trade, Lands and Cantonment, Military Accounts, ministry of Defence and Industry departments are presently working in the province on deputation. Among these officers, one is in BS-21, two in BS-20, eight in BS-19, 38 in BS-18 and 26 in BS-17, three in BS-16 and two in BS-11. All 37 officers of BS-17 were posted in BS-18 under the umbra of Own Pay and Scale policy whereas there was no such policy to post them one step above post
The home department wrote a letter to all the administrative departments with the direction that the applications of federal government officers posted in the province, who intend to import the weapon in their name be invited and forwarded to department till March, 22.
The interested officers would submit an application addressed to ministry of commerce with their credentials for the issuance of NOC for the import of weapon. The administrative secretary should duly verify the applications. The applicant should provide a copy of CNIC. He has to provide a undertaking to pay the cost of the weapon on import which is approximately between Rs.60,000 to 70,000.
The home department would forward the list of interested officers to ministry of commerce for approval and issuance of NOC. The government would bear the price of weapons initially from public kitty, which would be charged from the officers latter after import of weapons.
