    Default Daewoo Racer/Cielo Fan Club

    Dear All,

I am an owner of Daewoo Racer since 1995. It has proven to be a very comfortable and economical car throughout this period. It used to give an average of 13Km/L within city and ~15Km/L on long drives. Here are some pictures:

I would recommend buying this car who want a better car at low budgets!

Any member having used a Daewoo car must share their experience....(y)

AoA I am really obliged for clear and precise reply. I want a word of advise regarding rear wheel bearing,as u accelerate a humming sound comes from rear left wheel, the gen bearing is also producing a lot of noise.Presently I am in Kharian where no mechs and spares are available. Is it safe to drive to Rwp for these repairs in this condition?Recently I came to Kharian from Hyderabad by road and the car was overloaded and complete family (5 members) were travelling. More over no maint was carried out for last three yrs except brakes and AC.

    WAS,

There should be no problem in bringing it to Rawalpindi, just keep the speed below 80 km/h to avoid excessive heat to the bearing. It is also recommended that both wheel bearing should be replaced together, not just one side as most probably the other one is also likely to fail soon.

For vacuum leaks you should hear hissing sound while engine is running. For current leaks in the ignition system, you can observe sparklets in pitch dark while engine is running.

    Hello again testriver,

CNG prices are about to exceed the petrol prices so I'm thinking about tuning the car. I don't want manual tuning as they have done more damage to my car than improving it. If you can tell me some place in Islamabad where they tune the car to run on petrol ELECTRONICALLY, I'll be much obliged.

    Regards,
    Anas.

    AoA,

Do you want to tune your car on petrol? For a perfect tuneup on petrol, you have to completely get rid of CNG setup as the additional weight of cylinder + nozel/ventury, blocked air intake and timing advance will not allow you attain optimum performance. If you want to keep the setup, you will get maximum ~10Km/L. I recommend that you go to Khalid @ I-9 for tuning by plugging in the scanner. There is nothing to "tune" as such, just the ideal timing and the CO setting is what they do (although you can do that by yourself [timing adjustment + CO setting] but it is much more accurate using scanner showing live parameter values). For consistent performance on petrol after tuneup, install an EFi switch with emulator/advancer that will keep the petrol system alive by starting on petrol and then converting to CNG.

Dear testdriver I noticed the spark-lets as u directed and following was noticed:-
    1. The spark-lets were seen at head of the leads where they are affixed to the plugs.
    2. As u accelerate the spark-lets also increase.
    3. The no 1 lead is also producing spark-lets at the centre.
Kindly advise what should I do.I have changed the spark plugs 2 days back,Denso. Does the car require fresh tuning if leads are changed.

Hissing sound as if air is leaking from tires. BTW why do you suspect any vacuum leak? Any kind of rough idling?

IMO you have find the actual problem i.e. bad plug wires. As far as fresh "tuning" is concerned, nothing should be get affected by changing plugs except slight variation in the spark timing that can be left as is if there is no knocking issue.

Default 4 Speed Gear replacement with Double top 5 Speed Gear

    Dear All,

I have Daewoo Racer 1993 registered 2001 with 4 speed gear box. I have no trouble in current gear box and my car is running excellently. however, i am planning to replace double top 5 speed gear box. Is it a good choice to replace it. also will there be any performance changes. i.e. improve the performance or reduce the performance. my mechanic say that if you dont like the change then he will put back the old gear box without any cost. please guide me if its a good decision to go for 5 speed gear.

Also what does double top means?

    AoA,

In local city driving you will get no benefit from the 5-speed gearbox as there are rare chances of engaging the 5th gear. It is only beneficial in urban driving like highways and motorways. The Daewoo Racer's 4th gear at 3K RPMs let you attain around 100Km/h while in the 5-speed gear, the 5th gear at 3K RPMs yields 120Km/h. If you are not a regular user of highways and motorways, you don't get any benefit from the 5-speed transmission. Still if you want, there is no harm in changing the gearbox and yes try it before finalizing the deal as there are few gearboxes in old parts market having power hungry wide ratios that will compromise a lot on the overall performance of the original engine.

Double top is a local term means a gear on Top of Top gear means 5th gear, and that word has been in dictionary since ancient times when majority of the cars were having 4-speed transmissions and 5-speed transmission came into market. I wonder what would they call the 6-speed transmission, a triple top may be!

This means that the running speed and performance for 1-4 gear in 5 speed gear box is same as in 4 speed gear box.

    You are right!

To be honest majority of the gearboxes have obliterated codes, you have to get it installed to check the gear ratios. The short ratio 5-speed gearbox up to 4th gear has speeds in each gear similar to the existing 4-speed. To give you rough idea, have a look at the following gear/speed ratio:

NOTE: If you are dismantling a gearbox from an engine, the gearbox with SOHC kabli engine have 90% probability of Close Ratio gearbox.

    @3K RPM (Tire size: 175/70R13)

    Close Ratio

    1st gear - 21Km/H
    2nd gear - 40Km/H
    3rd gear - 60Km/H
    4th gear - 92Km/H
    5th gear - 115Km/H

    Wide Ratio

    1st gear - 27Km/H
    2nd gear - 50Km/H
    3rd gear - 70Km/H
    4th gear - 102Km/H
    5th gear - 130Km/H

    Thanks for the wishes!

OHC means Over Head Cam, it means that the valves are operated by a cam placed over the engine head. So far it has come in two configurations, SOHC (Single Over Head Cam) and DOHC (Dual Over Head Cam). SOHC have single cam while DOHC have dual cams to do the same job. The engine off Daewoo GTi (G15MF MPFi) came with a 5 speed transmission.

Dear testdriver, thanks for your valuable guidance. really helpful for me.

My mechanic also have a 7 speed automatic kickdown gearbox. can you let me know

    1. Howz the performance of automatic gearbox with standard daewoo racer 1.5 engine?
    2. Whether all automatic gearboxes are kickdown or there are other variations also?
    3. Does automatic gearbox require more engine power?
    4. How much is maintenance cost of a daewoo type automatic gearbox? is it cheaper or expensive thing to maintain the gearbox?

What is the donor car of the 7 speed transmission your mechanic has?

    1. I have seen very few Daewoo Racers with automatic transmission, though never driven one, but I heard it has reasonable performance.
    2. The Daewoo transmission shifting is controlled by separate unit called Transmission Control Module (TCM) and there is an option of conventional shifting (cable) also available. It is worth mentioning that there is no overdrive, only 3-speeds are available.
    3. Yes, it needs little more power
    4. This is the major drawback; lack of service parts and experties
