    Yesterday I visited Lahore Proton motors (It is the same showroom on jail road whis is also a dealer of Adam Revo).
    All the cars are very well finished, even the Saga (the Cheapest) has a very good finish and looks good. According to sales person it is fitted with the Landi Renzo CNG with Faber Cylinder. But all the other cars I saw had swithes of Zetronics in their Dashboards. But saga lacks practicality as the rear head room is very little and my head was touching the roof when I sat on the back seat.

    The Gen 2 1.3 cng is a very good looking car with modern looks. The interior is very attractive and modern looking. But I think the materials used inside are cheap in looks and some of the components were badly finished. The Stearing wheel looks good but has a very cheap hard plastic feel. Seats are very good and comfortable.
    They do'nt have the Gen2 1.6 so I cannot comment about its interior.
    The star of the show is Impian and it is very very good looking car and very high feel of luxury while sitting inside the car. All the materials and compnents seems to be of higher quality. The leather seats are very comfortable and of very good quality brown leather. But I think the hump in the floor at back seats will be painfull for middle passenger specially on long roots. Overall the quality and shape of the car make it much better than any other car available in Pakistan at the same and even at much higher price range. The rear seats has a large legroom even the front seat is compleately stretched back.
    But I think for such a large and heavy car the 1.6 litre engine is not enough, it should have been atleast 1.8.
    Also I read that Campro engines are simple DOCH engines and currently they dont offer VVT as normally publicised by them. But these are good at torque in comparison to its competetion.

    Rocketman, which Honda you sat in?
    Honda civic has almost flat floor and so is the city (having very little hump)
    Actually all the Honda cars have almost no hump at floor and these cars are very good for five passengers.
    Saga has a Carburettor engine just like the 1.3 Margalla.
    I think our Desi Mechenics will be much happier with this engine as all the Carby engines are simple and easily repairable. My height is 5'8".
    I think all the cars are good, specially Gen.2 and Impian.
    Only if they use the softer rubber type or leather type materiasl for Dash Board in Gen.2 it is a very good car.
    In regards to handling and Drive quality, only one who has driven these cars can be of useful input here.

    When I was sitting in Gen 2 1.3 there was another person checking the car and he told me that he has used this car for 3 years in the UK without single mechenical problem. He also told me that recently while he was on training in Malaysia he was using the Gen 2 there. He was booking the car for himself.
    There were two CNG cylinders fitted in gen2 with grey paint on those. But the space left after Cylindres is just so so. As I am used to Honda city which has very large trunk even after Cylinder fitting. But it should be the case as Gen two is a Hatchback car.
    Saga is also a Hatchback and left with little space after cylinder fitted there. But the back door (Hatchback door) opening feels very good as you have to apply a little force and the rest is done by the opening mechenism which opens it with a smooth feeling.

    In simple words the cars which rear wind screen raises up along with the trunk lid or you can say it the fifth door of the car.
    Yes mehran is a hatchback but protons are bigger cars with bigger trunks.

    Well, they have been here for 22 years but we don't see them being really successful. The market dorminance was basically due to the protectionism policy. Not sure if Pakistan is a free market, but Proton never really made it through in any free-market, so far.

    @RocketMan

    I mean, they survived the competition in these 22 years in home market (Malaysia) not because of it's competitiveness but government protection.

    Given that long period of protection, Proton should have done much further than what they are now. Therefore we Malaysian don't see what it is now as successful.

    In 2 years time, if it really dominates Pakistani market, it's just because they have found a less-competitive place to do business other than Malaysia.

    @drexchan: things have changed in Pakistan in the last one year. There were foreign manufacturers assembling their cars here. India did a good job nurturing their own industry. But now we have two Pakistani manufacturers with upto 70% parts all made in Pakistan.

    AMC and TMC are manufacturing vechicles while TMC is also exporting them. No matter what their quality is now, will be improved a lot in every passing year. If Proton keeps sending unsold stocked vehicles, they'll lose out. Even the steering of the Gen-2 is not the one that they sell in other countries, their CPS engines are not installed in cars sold here.

    So for more than twice the price of an AMC Revo 105i+, I say NO to a Proton Gen-2 unless they give their hi-tech models for the same price.

    I didn't notice any difference in the steering wheel.

    The CPS has NEVER been implemented in ANY campro engine, in ANY country.

    @drexchan:

    There are six buttons on the UK version steering wheel of the Gen-2. I dont see any close up so dont know what they do but my guess is that they control volume and tracks of the CD player.

    The research site said that CPS will be implemented in 2005, so why it is not yet implemented?

    Yes, those buttons are for the stereo control. Probably it's not available for the 1.3L. Please check the 1.6L. If it's not available on the 1.6L then you guys are "lucky".

    The CPS.. reliability. Proton used to promise more that what it could deliver.

    If my perception on your local market environment isn't wrong, I really wish Proton good luck.

    @Rocketman

    Kia Classic's got a bad engine? Me thinks not.

    And this is coming from a guy who owns both a Mehran and a Classic NGV that only have a month's delay in rolling out. The Classic's eaten up a Mehran alive as far as I can see. After I took the Classic out on the highway 3-4 times and took the Mehran on the same route, I started missing the Classic as I felt the Classic had a lot more to offer than any other 800-1000CC car I've ever driven.

    BTW, truly the Saga should be the perfect rival for the Cultus and fill the void left by the Classic. The Aeroback rear is a nice touch too. I personally like the interior and the modern placing of the AC controls, plus a digital trip/odometer!!! AWESOME!
    Till Later,

    Twisted.
