    Default @Xulfiqar Sb: Bought c180 98 model. Need help with maintenance/repair.

    @Xulfiqar Sb:
    I have seen lots of threads and lots of posts and am deeply impressed by your knowledge of vehicles. I am trying to browse through but things are so spread about that it is confusion. Moreover, perhaps every case is different and need specialized help, at least for the first time.

    This Monday, I bought a c180 98, Elegance Model with 93K miles (allegedly) on the odo. In driving for these 3 days I have jotted up a list of my observations, some serious, I believe. I need your expert advice on it. Here is the list of serious observations:

    [Post Edited with problems listed as solved/unsolved. The details of how a problem was solved is spread all over the many pages and posts. Please delve into the thread for details.]

    SOLVED PROBLEMS WITH CAUSES AND REMEDIES:
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
    1. Vibration in D, Cause: One engine mount was cut, replaced.
    2. Temp gauge does not get to half point, Cause: T-stat valve was jammed, replaced.
    3. Fluids replaced = Engine Oil and Transmission oil.
    4. Vibration in steering at all speeds, Causes: Mountings (changed), warped rotors, machined, balancing and alignment done. New steering shock installed.
    5. Rear Left Window does not close with button on door, Cause: Button faulty, replaced.
    6. Random HVAC blower speed: Ordered HVAC control unit from eBay. Fitted and working fine. No more issue.
    7. Broken Cruise Control: Ordered from eBay. Fitted and working fine.
    8. SRS AIRBAG Warning Light in Dash, Cause: Star scan tool (at Papu ustad, Pindi) told about two crash sensors (one under each front seat) to be faulty (or their connection is faulty). Shop gave a price of Rs.7,000 for 2 but I see that used are cheaply available on eBay. Would order two soon.
    9. Left handbrake shoe friction sound. I fitted new handbrake shoes and thought it needed adjustment. However, it turned out, after 5 tries at it, that the lug nuts on the wheels were of slightly varying length. The longer ones would brush on the handbrake clip that expands the mechanism. Older one was damaged. Got it replaced. Sound started coming after few days. I swapped some lug nuts from other wheels. It is peace ever since!
    10. Intermittent Windows -- Passenger and Driver side windows would not operate after few days of reset in any order. I suspected the rear-left window control module, opened the door cover to find that there is no window control module there! So this must not be the cause.
    Recently, I cleaned all the electric ground points in the vehicle. The issue of intermittent windows had reduced a great deal. More so, because before starting the vehicle, I operate all windows (first point in ignition).
    11. COOLANT VANISHING -- I needed to add 1 L in like 2 weeks (driving 300 miles). The cause was a leaky radiator. In summers the problem increased until I saw coolant drops beneath an idling car. Previous radiator was corroded with use of wrong coolant. Radiator replaced with a good condition exact part (Behr) from a half-cut. Coolant used would definitely be as per spec or MB.

    UNSOLVED PROBLEMS that are being debugged:
    ------------------------------------------------------------
    12. Relay clicking type sound behind key:
    The sound can start anytime but luckily not too often. Usually in peaceful driving it would be calm. Sometimes when I take some action like press brake pedal, turn on indicator, it will start clicking. I can feel the throbbing when I touch the key. Would start and stop itself.
    I have found out that whenever that clicking sound is heard, horn won't blow. Conversely when the horn does not blow, there are chances of those clicking sounds. When the horn blows, there won't be any clicking sound in that drive. Still trying to solicit the cause in a deterministic way.
    13. Sudden Downshift Jerk: Sometimes after driving the vehicle for a long time, like one hour, when slowing down because of mild braking (to a speed for which 1st gear may be needed) the car shifts into 1st gear very hardly.
    Kindly please advise. I am a keeper since I am a busy person. The car I was driving before this is with me for 9 years. For once, I want this car to be in a state that I know how things are. Thank you in anticipation and sorry for trouble.

    @Xulfiqar bhai pre-OBD2 diagnostic systems had diagnostics port-16 ports or 38.

    Reading fault codes was a tedious job, how can we speed this up? Can we have ECU livedata on M111s as some carsoft is showing?

    Lastly where can we buy the BLINKER LED for diagnostics? I have its circuit diagram but want a neat package!

    Thanks

    When the valves are closed off there is no flow in the core ergo its "cold"

    the valves do operate on magnetic action - the entire assembly which includes the large valve and the guiding poppet move up and down releasing/blocking coolant as required.

    the way the interior sees two different temperatures left to right is because the core itself is internally split in two halves, whatever half is flowing coolant will become hot - the air ducting is made to take advantage of this. The A/C evap is also set in the same path - thats why you see one side cooling when the charge is low as the evap fills from bottom up.
    Great to know I am not bad with intuition! The shape of the poppet valve and the fact that their shafts were plastic made no sense had the coolant been flowing from the one pipe to the two pipes.
    So normally the poppets would be lifted will coolant flow and would need solenoid action, plunger thrust to keep them down -- to close or constrict the flow.

    Since the vehicle is up for sale (Ads both on Pakwheels and Olx) too for Rs.12,35,000/- and I am referring everybody to this maintenance thread since I do not wish to hide anything I know, I also wish to share the latest photos I snapped today after a simple wash and wiping with the same cloth (which has left its 'burr' around a bit).

    Date: 21 June 2016 (Camera date is a day ahead)
    Mileage on Odometer: 99,500 miles.
    Parts in transit from Germany:
    i) Front left indicator (pushed and clip broken by a motorcycle),
    ii) crash sensors under the seat (Star-Diagnostics reason for SRS light in the Dash),
    iii) Automatic Transmission Electrical Connector Bushing,
    iv) Red lens repair tape for repair of brake right light (broken by motorcycle handle),
    v) Engine oil level sensor,
    vi) Boot lock rubber seal.
    Item being worked upon: Poppet valves of Duo Valve for heater
    Car seat covers were sewn but I removed them for washing. Did not sew the covers back, else a wrinkle free seat covers effect can be achieved.
    What is not visible is the passenger side headrest is loose (for back/forth movement) and driving seat needs new cushioning (on my list after Ramzan).

    Everything else about this car, can be found by going through this thread.

    Car pictures on an 'as on 21 June 2016' can be seen at the link:

    https://drive.google.com/folderview?...3c&usp=sharing

    PS: I would never have liked to sell it but I need money to pay off some loan.

    Anyone who got his Mercedes seats cushioned in Pindi/Islamabad? I need to know of a good expert. The driver's seat needs new cushion.
    Please share address/contact.

    get an old camera roll case and punch some holes in it, place your LED in one hole a moment switch in another and trail your wires out of one (add a wire strain relief for safety) - you have your own nice looking blink tester.

    There is a way to speed it up, find an old HHT. it will be expensive though. When I worked these cars I usually used just my DMM and my oscilloscope. The 38 pin ones were great with the STAR and muxer in between. Easier to work on.

    @CosmicSynergy:
    It is out of no possessiveness of this thread or disrespect that I say this, but I need to clear it up.

    You need to go a long way in collecting data for your planned w124 purchase, then actually going for one, and then seeking help maintaining it. It would be better if you start a separate thread because mixing topics in a single thread would not help users seeking a solution to their problems!

    When you document all 'related' topics under one thread, it helps future users a great deal.

    I am sure @Xulfiqar Sb would have no objection handling your questions there, since, as far as I have understood, he is the type of a craftsman for whom craft becomes his own reward.

    My advice, never visit that electrician again. You are lucky to have come from him without getting another problem.
    I put in a used compressor 2 years ago for 18k and it is working splendidly since then.

    @Haroon_Tarar Sb:

    You mean this 'Aqeel' AC guy?
    You have prior experience with him or you mean he must be bad workman since he recommended putting in a new compressor?

    Actually, in my view, luck has lot of role to play with used items. At times one can get a better experience than probably putting in a new item and at others it may not last a day!

    @Haroon_Tarar Sb:
    In this thread I try to lay down details as much as possible. We should learn from your experience of keeping and maintaining Mercedes.
    So whom would you recommend for AC work, and whom would you recommend as an electrician?

    For ac, Asif is good. Working on bank road.
    Electrician is a bit tricky part. For small works, Aqeel is ok. For detailed work, no better option than Pyara.

    ^^ In most cases I hear that this Iqbal Pyara works on replace till it works principle. That is not a good way to troubleshoot anything electrical - specially on CAN-BUS cars.
