    Default Transmission issue??

    Experts

    The car under question is toyota crown 1992 running a 1 jz-ge. The issue is with the gear shifts; when i shift gear from N to D, the shifts are proper. The car properly shifts starting from 1st gear.
    However, when i am driving and stop the car keeping the car in D, it feels that the car does not go back to 1st gear. If remains on 2nd gear and on an approximate 10 meter movement, the thrust of 1st gear comes in.
    What could be the issue? As it is fine when gear is shifted from N to D!
    I presume some sensor needs cleaning; Need your expertise here!

    Pertinent to add that all the oil are meticulously taken care of.

    I believe you are using an electronic transmission and the only reason that can cause such behaviour is sticking shift solenoid or the TPS IDL signal is not registering with the ECU.

    Please verify what transmission are you using.

    I did not get what you referred by electronic transmission?
    The car had this issue when i bought it and one of the solenoid was dead. Replaced it and the car got back to normal. However, at that time it continuously engaged 3rd gear on initial pick. This time it is engaging 1st gear but does not come back to the first when stopped.

    Be electronic trans I mean the shifting is controlled by the TCU or ECU itself, the toyota elec trans has two solenoids to make up 4 speeds and one to lock the convertor.

    The only time the trans downshifts to gear 1 is when the vehicle speed is nearing zero, the IDL switch in the throttle position sensor is triggered and the pressure control cable has released.

    You are saying that you had a solenoid replaced earlier. It maybe that the same solenoid is now sticking.

    the shift solenoids work like this example.

    S1 S2
    1 0 = gear 1
    1 1 = gear 2
    0 1 = gear 3
    0 0 = gear 4

    1 = on
    0 = off

    so if you sticking in second I can assume that solenoid S2 is sticking. btw how smooth does the trans shift? When you changed the solenoids did you use new or used parts?

    I did not buy a new one! The mechanic replaced it with a used part.
    Transmission shifting: hmmm! i would say that it is some what smooth but there definitely is an initial jerk when car is shifted from N to D.
    When the car is stopped (speed is 0)while D is engaged, the pick from that point is in the 2nd gear initially, say for 3 seconds and then the 1st gear kicks in!
    Appreciate your patience and guidance!

    Firstly you should always replace any such electric parts with new ones, using used parts in such application is extremely bad practice.

    To get to any root problem I would need to know the transmission model no. There should only be a very soft jerk from N to D, but you are facing 2nd gear start which is incorrect. In a hydraulic trans this would mean that the governor is sticking open - In your transmission which is the toyota electric shift system, there is no governor and it relies on vehicle speed sensor input and Throttle position sensor idle circuit input.

    Check the fault codes and post what you get. On a 1JZ they are extracted from the check engine light flashes after shorting terminals TE1 and E1 in the diagnosis box.

    the convertor failure would not affect shift - if would fail to rotate the transmission, the shift is controlled by drive shaft speed and accelerator input. The problem more likely seems to be in sticking solenoid or missing idle position signal.

    Very true bro...people don't alway give a full description ..the reason I mentioned the torque converter is..if its on its way out..it needs more pressure to to push the gearbox into action .it sounded like it was engaging first gear...ok...but when accelerating something's holding it back..it could even be a broken engine mounting..

    the description says he gets stuck in 2 and it only goes to 1 when the vehicle speed registers 10 km/h with throttle pressed.

    U got it wrong! when the car is stopped while the gear remains in D, the initial pick is in the 2nd gear and then it shifts back to 1st after few seconds.

    Xulfiqar

    I will visit mechanic to get the error codes. In the meanwhile, i was thinking if i should open up the chamber and get it cleaned. Is that a good idea?

    Its always good practice to clean out the sump when you change the fluid. But never ever use a lint rag to clean anything. Always use lint free pieces. anyway - if you can backprobe the shift solenoid wiring from the ECU to a couple of LEDs you can make out if they are getting signal at the right time. But before this I would suggest you look at the throttle position sensor installed position and wiring - the IDL switch error code comes out as "switch fault" error in toyota.
