Question O/D light is flashing, at random times.

I bought Toyota BB few days back. it's O/D off light has started flashing on and off. It does not do it all the time but it does it everyday from time to time. If I shut the car off and restart the light goes out. It seems like it starts when the engine gets little heat up. It also seems like the gears has started slipping some or some fluctuations / jerks in the drive is observed when the light is blinking. I took it to workshop but they could find some "general fault" and nothing more.

your mazda/ford transmission has a known fault with this and it should be tended to without delay to save the transmission from destroying itself. A good scan tool can interrogate it and see whats wrong - in any case the whole transmission is removed and the faults corrected - you cannot do it in place as its very tight on the 626

The toyota unit is pretty robust and its suffering is a bit alarming - I would recommend pull the codes and correct the faults.

I really appriciate u r opinian bro but here in kuwait replacing a transmission from a japanies half cut cost cheaper then ( scan+ removal+ fixing , getting new parts+ yet no guranties) and less headache. So for me i am simply surviving with it as it do this once daily. I have a vaccation and home build plan starting next week. Might sell off the car and go for a mitsubishi nativa after i get back here...

I believe you have the US built 626 with the ford gearbox

That is even common here in USA - but the problem with these gearboxes is that nearly every used one will be beat to death - the cars meant for mid east have extra transmission coolers in them to cope with the added heat load. They may still fail.

that is why a good repair on these gearbox is far better than a swap. You may need to look hard for a good and reliable person who knows how to repair automatic transmissions. Shooting a used gearbox at the car wont solve anything.

A Pakistani person contacted me to tend to his mazda 626 transmission, his *** story was that he had a mechanic swap in a junked transmission 3 times and every single time he spent a good amount on labor price - and still he had problems.

He is now thinking of junking the car as the cost of a rebuild + all the costs he has spent before would exceed the value of the car.
