A friend has a toyota IST 1500cc (1NZ-FE) with auto transmission
Background : Initial complain was that car would stall or shut down on idle, with engine check light on .. i told him to perform a reset with battery leads .. he did but to no good (a fewdays back) except that engine check light went off .. last night he came over and the first thing i noticed was a smell of burning (like wires) with some smoke, as i opened bonnet .. the insulation tape on battery positive lead had almost melted ... the battery terminals were slightly loose i tightened them.. water level was ok in radiator
secondly, the engine was missing badly .. i told him to get it checked as it looked likes a coil or plug issue and the appropriate plug socket was not in my tool kit .. increased idle a bit .. no engine heat up symptoms .. no smoke or burning smell was apperent later, so left it as it was.
Problem : when he started the car to drive, the gear shift was stiff like anything and the gear and handbrake area was slightly heated up .. i took over and shifted it in D and drove it .. no abnormal noise or problems in gear .. told him to get it checked as well, as i was not sure what could be the exact cause ... later he messeged me that gear shifting improved a little while he drove home .. today the missing issue was also rectified, as it was due to a burnt coil, which was replaced by mechanic
-- what caused gear shifting to become stiff .. the loose terminal or the burnt coil ?
-- what is actual problem as gear is still stiff .. the cable, solenoid or pivot type items or something else
-- the gears are also not locking properly plus the release switch is stuck since the car was purchased
