Default TOYOTA auto gear shift stiff ... need help

A friend has a toyota IST 1500cc (1NZ-FE) with auto transmission

Background : Initial complain was that car would stall or shut down on idle, with engine check light on .. i told him to perform a reset with battery leads .. he did but to no good (a fewdays back) except that engine check light went off .. last night he came over and the first thing i noticed was a smell of burning (like wires) with some smoke, as i opened bonnet .. the insulation tape on battery positive lead had almost melted ... the battery terminals were slightly loose i tightened them.. water level was ok in radiator

secondly, the engine was missing badly .. i told him to get it checked as it looked likes a coil or plug issue and the appropriate plug socket was not in my tool kit .. increased idle a bit .. no engine heat up symptoms .. no smoke or burning smell was apperent later, so left it as it was.

Problem : when he started the car to drive, the gear shift was stiff like anything and the gear and handbrake area was slightly heated up .. i took over and shifted it in D and drove it .. no abnormal noise or problems in gear .. told him to get it checked as well, as i was not sure what could be the exact cause ... later he messeged me that gear shifting improved a little while he drove home .. today the missing issue was also rectified, as it was due to a burnt coil, which was replaced by mechanic

    Questions

-- what caused gear shifting to become stiff .. the loose terminal or the burnt coil ?
-- what is actual problem as gear is still stiff .. the cable, solenoid or pivot type items or something else
-- the gears are also not locking properly plus the release switch is stuck since the car was purchased
-- who will be the right person in karachi for the job ?

Good thing you found the issue - it may have led to disaster.

the battery lead melting off is usually due to arching at the terminal - clean and tighten, the handbrake and shift lever heating up is very bad - the cat converter is right there and must have been glowing red hot due to the misfire (misfire = raw fuel into the converter = converter experiencing combustion temperature)

the hard shifting occurs if the transmission resets itself while on the fly (loose battery cables or bad wiring/fuses). If that occurs - immediately stop the car and allow to rest as super hard kick shifts can damage hard parts in the gearbox.

btw - what was the error code

the gearshift selector on that car is a plastic item and its best to replace the whole unit as an assembly rather than attempt to repair it. It usually does not go bad for the life of the car. But it seems that the intense heat has deformed something. Also replace the select cable from the gearbox to the shifter it you suspect its damaged from heat too.

thanks for the reply ... you mean to say that he replaces the complete shifter unit or the complete gear box ... i think u mean the shifting mechanism .. budget constraint is another issue here .. how much a kabli type costs? any ideas? what about looking for specific damaged part and replacing it ? plus do guide where are the gear mechanics in karachi

the smoke and smell plus the gear doesn't lock means something has already melted and needs to be re-placed

yes - the gearshift selector not moving smoothly is a sign of damaged shifter, the cat converter in that car is also right under the middle of the front seats and you already reported a misfire condition which almost guarantees the cat converter must be badly overheating.

Im not suggesting to repalce the gearbox - just the shifter mechanism and selector cable. Its not a high tech job, any person with a toolkit can accomplish this for you. There are a few automatic trans repair guys in Karachi, nearly all of them at one time were concentrated near khudadad colony, PECHS hall, Tariq road etc. I think the guy who works from a little shop near PECHS hall is the oldest in this trade. He was repairing autoboxes when american cars were seen on roads in Karachi.
