Default Toyota Passo/Daihatsu Boon Owners/Fan Club

The purpose of this thread is to discuss and share views regarding Daihatsu boon/Toyota passo and to provide a common platform for the owners and potential buyers to discuss the car.
Passo/Boon has become quite popular in the last 2 or 3 months. People are getting curious to know about this car which offers better features than the overpriced 1000cc vitz in a better price tag. The purpose of the club would be to share technical / operational information regarding the car. As well as help fellow members with different issues regarding the everyday running of the car. Realistic advices on prices regarding the condition and model of car will be provided.

    Hello Guyx,

when my car is standing at some inclined road or parking area, when i shift the gear from P to R or D it is very hard, does anyone know or experienced something like that?

Is this a problem or something.

    Thanks.

This usually happens if you dont use parking brake (a.k.a handbrake; but foot brake in left corner next to brake paddle in Passo usually) and leave the car resting at the force of transmission, the gear locks and gets very hard to release it from P. If you use parking brake and still this happens, that means your parking brake is loose and not gripping which causes the resting load to burden your transmission when in P forcing the car to stay rested due to gear sort of effect like people do in a manual transmission. In the longer run this can also ruin your automatic gearbox. Make it a habit to use your parking brake. Also do get the parking brake checked/adjusted. Such a jerking happens in all automatic cars and not just Passo under such a scenario.

You are talking about the box that fits between front seats? They are very rare in these imported passo. I am trying to change my front cut seat with full sofa seat. If I get that, I will sell the center box.

thank you so much for your input friend.

Yes i release the footbrake first and then hold the brake like we do normally in automatic transmissions but it needs a force to shift the gear only when it is parked or resting at some inclined level/road.

Next time i will try not to release the footbrake and hold the brake first then shift the gear to see what happens?

    Thanks

Exactly bro.... That transition between parking brake > gear still in P > brake pedal and shifting out P is when the weight and load transfers to transmission sort of locking it in P. Its always better to: Brake > Release Park brake > Shift gear. The key is brake pedal first thing in all automatic cars, that is why all Push start cars too dont start without brake pedal.

Even when parking the car to rest, its a vice versa process, means after all the gear into P and parking brake and everything, the last thing should be removing foot from main Brake Pedal else its back to square 1 of putting force/weight of car resting on transmission.

First most thing on driving seat of an Automatic car: Press brake pedal (before everything else)
    &
The last most thing getting out of an Automatic car: Release brake pedal (after everything else)

Apart from Passo i experience the same locking jerk in other cars too if i put it in P and leave it wihout parking brake. Or leave parking brake first and later press brake to shift transmission.

I think oil change not at all required unless the problem persists even after the new practice of brake sequence OR unless your car has been driven a specific mileage on which company schedule recommends change of gear oil. Also the another scenario would be if gear oil has not been changed after car was imported and not been used for a long time despite scheduled gear oil change mileage not achieved. I am not sure about exact schedule of Passo but usually automatic transmission oil change interval is every 40000 kms.

Hopefully the jerk will be gone once car weight stops resting on transmission when parked. If you don't know when last gear oil was changed (since previous history upon import is unknown even with a car showing actual mileage and no meter tempering) it is better to be safe and get it changed like we do with all other fluids. About fluid and oil change schedule of Passo i think it has been under discussion on a couple of previous pages of this thread.

thank you Ali for the nice info, yes when this car was imported in 2013 the Owner said that the gear oil was changed and i forgot to ask him the mileage at which it was changed. Well what do you think is the best Gear Oil for Passo? as it is Auto Trasmission not CVT different from Vitx , i will change it if necessary.

    Thanks

Honestly don't know much technical stuff about oils and quality etc so i wont try to impress by being a fake expert to give you a wrong advice 😉

The jerk and stuff is another story that i was able to help with. Some more of our friends on this thread are requested to help smokenn here. As far as i am concerned i usually trust the mechanic's recommendation in this regard. Any good known imported brand would do. Last i remember it was ZIC-ATF (red bottle and fluid color) in my Passo. Honda's are dealt with their own brand fluids and German cars mostly use LiquiMoli which is a superior brand as compared to others. I'm not sure if LiquiMoli is as suitable for Japanese cars.

Yes you are right may be i should go with my mechanic's recommendation too, and i guess ZIC-ATF is used for Japanese cars too cause someone once told me about it but one last thing that how much (in liters) we should pour the gear oil ? any idea ? suggestions are welcome.

Toyota T-IV (4) transmission oil for Passo/Boon 2004-10. Bottom pan is opened for service of oil filter and taking out oil.
Although oil can be taken out without opening the pan via a bottom drain nut and taking out inside tube through same hole (bit tricky to take out the tube) but our mechanics are not ready to do that as it leaves them for quite less labour charges. Mechanics usually insist on closing the pan with silicon and then tightening the screws, however a senior pakwheeler and expert, @Xulfiqar, suggests replacing the gasket at the pan too once it is opened.

I remember getting 4 liters but all of it was not used. Some little amount was left behind. It will use somewhere between 3.5-4 liters
