Thread: Engine Overhaul Vs. Swap: Passo 2008

    Default Engine Overhaul Vs. Swap: Passo 2008

    AOA,

    My car engine has blown its piston rings. Engine is fine at low rpms but when reved high it emits bluish smoke. Uptill now there has been no loss in power. I have following queries regarding the same issue:

    1. Whether it is better to swap the engine or overhaul it.
    2. Costs comparison for both swap and overhaul.
    3. Best mechanic to do the best option in pindi/islamabad.

    Sell your car and buy another one. Overhauling & swapping both are risky projects.

    How did it happen? People are of the opinion that Japanese put some kind magic in their cars and they keep working for insane amount of time without periodic maintenance.

    6 years is nothing for even a Pakistani car. I would really want to know what made the engine go bad.

    Its actually the Ustaad jee magic. The ustaad's who say pilug aur tarein new dalein aur Havoline dalein bara acha oil hai mota hai. lol

    What are the symptoms? Is the car smoking or reduced power, else you did a compression to know engine is bad?

    Well, i had some recent trips to nathia gali, abbottabad, thandiani and other hilly areas recently with 6 passengers onboard, including me. Some thing went bad there and my car started to emit somke and consume engine oil.

    The car is emitting high amount of white (bluish according to the mechanic) smoke when reved full and consuming engine oil. The engine oil level drops to near half after 3000 kms. I used ZIC A+ before this issue and then i changed to Liqui Moly but the oil is still decreasing.

    After all these symptoms, i was told by the mechanic that the rings are shot. I didnt conclude myself

    Yes the car is emitting somke at high revs as i have mentioned in the original post. There has been no or atleast unnoticable loss in engine power. I didnt do any compression tests. The engine is consuming engine oil.

    this alone is not enough evidence, do a compression test, oil smoke is also caused by bad valve seals.

    btw - 6 passengers in a hatchback climbing nathiagali? car with autobox?

    Yes auto gear box. My car has gear lever placed near stearing and handbrake is actually in the foot place, so it can easily accomodate 6 passengers. and it didnt find any difficulty in climbing the hills. It was actually at times i reved it hard while racing with other cars of my friends and once i mistakenly downshifted to first gear at above 60 speed which i feel caused this problem.

    Can u please tell me where can i get this compressoin test job done. I mean do i have to look for a specialist for the same or is it an easy available thing? What if my car passes the compression tests?

    good compression and oil consumption is usually bad valve seals.

    btw - dont flog the little engine - the car has its load limit - stay in it.

    Ok i might be lucky if that is the case. Can valve seals be replaced/repaired easily? or is it a big job?
