Default Engine tuneup questions for Passo

    Asslam-u-Alaikum,

I am driving a 2007 model Toyota Passo since last three years. Driven it from 14,000KM ODO to 98,000KM now. I have always used Caltex Fully Synthetic motor oil. Maintenance regularly done like engine oil gear oil and air/oil filters changed etc.

I am noticing a little bit reduced mileage since last month or so. As 100,000 ODO milestone is ahead, I am thinking of getting a complete tuneup done. Here is my checklist and questions:

1 - Get oil changed with air / oil filter.
2 - Get Spark plugs changed (I have changed it 2 times before with probably genuine plugs)
3 - Get fuel filter checked. (change if required)
5 - Check hose pipes for durability.

6 - I have never done tappets tuning. Whenever I asked my mechanic to check tappets, he says nothing happens to tappets. Don't change their original setting. Its hard to get it back to original setting. Should I get it tuned at 100,000KM? Maybe Toyota 3S dealers can do it with perfection?

7 - When I did my car's very first oil change at 14000KM ODO, pump guy (Caltex F6, Islamabad) said that oil is black, please get your engine flushed. I never did it. Does engine flush really help in getting any sort of improvements or is it just a means of making more money from customer? My mechanic advised against doing it. If it really helps, is there a mechanism available to analyze engine exhaust / oil to see if cleanup is required?

8 - How to get catalytic converter checked and cleaned? I am against removing it. It might help me in getting better mileage but will also increase noise and pollution.

9 - Anything else to get checked at 100,000?

10 - Which workshop would you take your car for above mentioned items checked and tuned?

    Thanks
    Hassan

Seems you are already very wisely taking care of your ride.
Why to worried about 100K reading?
Keep up your routine for changing fluids and keep your car rolling. I am sure that that way you are taking care of your vehicle, will not bring any severe danger to its engine health till another 100K.
But the few things like Plugs, Hose pipes, Tires, Blowing the Air filter, A/C filter, etc. keep them under your observation and change when needed. Rest your car is fine. Keep enjoying.

Turning the engine oil black means that the air-fuel ratio is too rich. It can be tested with the help of a diagnostic computer. Specifically following items need to be scanned:
    1. Air fuel ratio (As close as to 14.7:1).
    2. Short-term fuel trim system (+- 10%).
    3. Long-term fuel trim system (+- 10%).
    4. Engine coolant temperature sensor.
    5. MAF (Mass Air Flow sensor, 2-4 gm/sec at idle speed and 4-6 at 2500 rpm).
    6. Fuel pump pressure (41-49 psi).
    Hope that works.

If your Catalytic Convertor requires cleaning, go to Sarya chowk G-8 and get it cleaned from Imran. He is located right on the chowk. Clean CATCON will improve engine performance dramatically, besides improving fuel consumption considerably. Do this as a first step.

If your tappets are not making noise during idling, they don't need to be adjusted. If you have to adjust them go to some ustaad, not these every day mechanics.

Thanks, I have done catalytic converter cleaning. There is some improvement but still the hesitation in acceleration when pedal is pressed till around 25% is still there. I have searched a lot of this issue and it seems like its related to EGR valve not working correctly. I will check the market about its price and try it by changing before buying it.

You may add a defective PCV into this list. Infact, it should be replaced to clear out the daught first.

Thank you brother and I appreciate your advice. Here I would like to add a bit more. The parts are not always replaced on hit and trial basis. The PCV valve has two states. Either it could be stuck closed or stuck open. If the valve is stuck closed the fuel trim values tend to move towards the negative side because the ECM subtracts the fuel from the base injection time whereas if it is open the values tend to move towards the positive side thus by adding more fuel to the base injection time to achieve the stichiometric ratio . Fuel trims are one of the indicators which could reveal the pcv valve condition.
Thank you again for your support.

Have you ever cleaned your throttle assembly. If not get it cleaned from 3S dealership. No adjustments, just cleaning.

How good is engine flush? I have Passo 2007 and want to change oil from zic 5w40 to LM 5w30, therefore I was thinking of flushing the engine first and then change oil to 5w30. should I go for it or is it more of wasting the money? if yes, what is the proper way for flushing engine? secondly, 5w30 is better or 0w20, considering my car is 2007 and 75K+ driven? Would appreciate sincere reply...Thanks

Stick to 5w40, your engine doesn't require a thinner oil, plus 75k is quite a bit of mileage. Stick to this oil, as for the flush, it helps clean the system, the procedure is to first, empty the chamber, then put in 2 litres of oil, start the engine and keep it like that for 5 mins, rev it once or twice, then turn it off and remove the oil. Flush is only required if the chamber is dirty and it changes the oil colour to a dark one. If your oil doesn't change colour, flush isn't necessary

I have done basic engine tuneups. Engine oil changed, oil filter, air filter changed, oil grade changed back to caltex fully synthetic, carburetor cleaned, spark plugs changed.

The problem is car feels sluggish when accelerator padel is pressed slightly or even when fully pressed, it first feels heavy/sluggish and then car picks up after some time. It seems like car is not getting enough air or fuel. But these things have been checked and cleared by mechanic. Anymore tips?

Mechanic has suggested adding fuel injector cleaner once in full fuel fill-up.
Hello, is your problem fixed? I have the same problem on my car and would be grateful if you can suggest a fix.

    Thanks.

Get catalytic converter cleaned. It must be choked by now. Imran silencer works at sarya chowk G-8 will clean it and after that it will be good for another 50K KM. After cleaning of catalytic converter you will notice noticeable increase in engine power and much better fuel economy.
